Not sure why you are leaving out Olympus and Panasonic, but they leave Sony for dead on native glass options, and both Sony and Fuji for dead on AF performance and newest sensor is much improved. Fuji is going all out on glass which is great. but it's seen as a poor man's Leica system with expensive glass and really only makes sense a total replacement for your DLSR given the cost of membership. As for EVF it took Sony quite a while to offer one either built-in or as an optional attachment, something m/43 had from the outset. Samsung also made a monumental error with their NX-200 coming out after the NEX 7 without an EVF option.
Imagine trying to frame shots via the rear lcd while you have your large adapted EF lenses hanging off the camera. Only the fans bois could find this acceptable IMO. It might work for a tiny P&S where weight and balance isn't an issue and you hold the camera quite steady, but not for a camera with the potential to use heavy glass. ...Show more →
If you are holding the lens with your left hand, then it is bearing all the weight and the right hand is aiming and firing shutter. I guess I am a fanboi but I don't see the issue with a non-EVF; this is intended for use as a P&S not a dslr. The fact that it has a giant by comparison sensor along with top notch glass available seems like this will do just fine.
Do I intend to buy one? Hell no, but I don't think I am the target customer. Maybe if I try one in the store I might be interested, but at the price this is likely to command I don't want one.

The EVF in these cameras remind me of the first generation AF cameras. They had "AF" but it was useless in critical situations.
Honestly I could care less about a half ass tiny little EVF on a camera meant to replace my point and shoot. The large sensor, iPhone type LCD, and the tiny little F/2 lens is what matters.
You are talking about the X100 here and to boot, it has a fabulous viewfinder.

But the main complaints about other failing mirrorless options are:
1) Lack of native compact glass
Considering it hasn't even been announced yet, you have no idea how quickly more glass will be announced
2) Lack of EVF and good auto-focus
Considering it hasn't even been announced yet, you have no idea how good or bad the AF is. The upper P&S crowd already are used to the LCD instead of a viewfinder.

Let's hope this is but the entry level camera and they do higher level version. I'm sure it'll sell up a strom as other than EVF it looks pretty good. It took Olympus a while to come out with the OM-D line, but at least they had a hot-shoe EVF option.

Actually I think this latter point is easily dealt with. EVF or not, there is no way a camera as small at this can be comfortably held by the body when a heavy EF or EF-S lens is mounted. But it should be very easy to support entirely by the lens: hold the camera and lens (by the lens) in one hand and focus and shoot with the other hand using the touch-screen.
Good luck with that. Trying to frame the moment holding at arms length in one hand while screwing around with the touch screen to focus.

It does look like it has an HDMI port so in theory you could use a third party EVF. The question is how long in the black out period. On the 1D series the black out period on the EVF via HDMI with my SmalHD EVF is several seconds....

Here is the blackout formula for EF-M: (1D series price / EF-M price) x 1D series blackout .

But we are hoping for more than just another P&S no? They are a dime a dozen out there...don't need anymore. I want something compact enough to carry with me yet still provide me the joy of using the gear and produce decent results in the end. A P&S just does not cut it for me, and until the camera gets a viewfinder, it is just a P&S.

I agree - I'll concede they will probably give us a lot for the money. But I'm not looking for a good P&S either. Does small mean cheap? Why not a compact rival to a DSLR i.e. Leica M? Small can also mean best in class.

^^^ Like Leica M ?. I think only you and AGeoJo can afford it . I wouldn't care if it's called P&S, Beelzebub, Kwyjibo, Chimichanga, or Rhesus Macaque .

Any word on the price?
According to the Dpreview.com hands-on preview, it's going to be $799 for the body and 22mm F2.0 prime. It's another $299 for the 18-55mm kit lens. The 18-55mm and body kit does not seem to be available in the U.S.
European pricing is at €849 with 18-55mm lens, €1049 with 18-55mm + 22mm lenses, €979 with 22mm lens + EF adapter
I was kind of hoping they would price it at the same price as the Sony Nex F3 which includes an 18-55mm at $599. However, the pricing seems to be understandable I guess as it's priced close to the 650D/4Ti while still being higher than Canon G1X which has recently moved down to $709.

Alas Chez, why do you think Toyota sells so many bland, boring, average cars. Most people just don't care enough to worry about the important stuff.
