Wow, page 15 alone is filled with so many great shots...
Stan, it seems you really do prefer to shoot the 50 L at f/2, and it sings for you, even if you hate it. Thanks for showing your car mount rig, too.
Lars, you catch so many examples of pure colorful abstract beauty, whether it's people, birds, or buildings. Peter, and everyone else I'm missing, great birds, ships, people, cats, nature, etc.
When the temp hits a record 106 F/41 C, the humidity is at tropical levels, and it's sunny, I don't want to be outside doing any kind of photography. The desert at much higher temps is much more enjoyable for me. Anyway, when doggie and I get back from a necessary walk, I'm drenched in perspiration, but reminded that dogs do not perspire. Instead, they do this. Remember the jokes about canine thermometers, measuring temp by tongue extension?
A lot of saliva on the floor, and even on Photon's paws.

No kidding about that......in fact, based on what I gather, a fair number of 800L owners use their lens handheld with varying frequency and duration. Besides, I couldn't shoot a smallish Common tern or a similar bird in flight off a pod, and I'd like to hear from someone who can. (Please no lucky shots. ). It's hard enough doing it with 800L handheld.
Here's another TIF with handheld 1DMkIIN + 800L.
Well there's hope. At a whopping 1.36 lbs lighter, the 600mm II should be a piece of cake to heft around. Except for differences in weight distribution and what not. Looking good.

Stan, what did you use to trip the shutter? Also, nice shots of the kids. Are you getting reacquainted with your dearly beloved 50L?
If you look carefully you can see the cable release coming out of the camera. It was set on a 2s interval, and I just locked it under the trunk lid so it wasn't bouncing around.
The 50L goes with me everywhere. Old high school girlfriend story always applies...

You got your 50L pregnant and her daddy marched you down the aisle at gunpoint?
Love you guys...
Just got back from the Parade of Sails (Tall Ships - Newport, RI), it was beautiful; weather-sky-temps. My shooting platform (52ft Cat) was the way to go on this trip. I used the 70-200 MkII on the 5D MkII, and the 24-105L on the 7D for the close-in shots. I had the 400mm in the pack, but never pulled it out for myself; it got passed around to others with Canon gear. They were very pleased with what they ended up with from what I overheard, so everyone was happy... Now I have to go through about 1300 images to get them down to the real keepers, but here are eight that I like.
Edd, lovely ships. Unicorn, all female crew...that's where you needed to use the 400, plus maybe an extender!
Albert (panicatnabisco), I like that engine shot. Interesting that you shot both a 5D3 and 1D X, and used the 16-35 on each.

Hope y'all don't mind me stopping by the thread and putting up a few shots. Summertime to me means time for air shows and vacations! Since I don't leave on vacation until August, you're stuck with a few shots from recent air shows.

Too hot for birds in flight? This was kind of pushing the limits. Check the ISO! Somewhat cropped, too.
Cute catch, Jess.......if it wasn't for the exif info posted, I couldn't have guessed the shot was taken in very low light.......which is good.
From my 2nd gen 1D perspective, anything above ISO 400 is too high already, and ISO> 800 will probably lead to a significant IQ loss.

Good Morning Peter!,

Wheee.....gorgeous photos, Edd.
Thanks so much...it really was a great time out there, and I was fortunate to have the access that I did. The gear-sharing was funny also; plenty of "L" glass to be tried if you wanted. One gent had a 600mm that he put away; he ended up using my 400mm for the long shots after his arms gave out...
I thought of you when groups of Osprey got into the mix over fish they had spotted. Their fishing (dive with claws first) got disturbed because of the activity; they will be relaxed today, as the boats have prepped for travel this morning. I really enjoyed the tern shots...you always get the framing-focus spot on...nice presentation for us all
Jim Bau: Nice to see you here, and the "high speed-low drag" shots look really nice! Welcome to the crew... Thanks for the kind words also...it's nice not to have to "explain" anything on this thread .
Jess: I agree with Peter...wow on the ISO; how are you handling the heat, seriously? My rule is a quart of water (no sugary crap) an hour while in NV, and more if at elevation. Heavy going out, but not as heavy as the heli-trip due to heat stroke...did that in 1985, and was lucky to stay vertical...
Looking forward to more great photos on this thread!

A walk in the park with a friends 70-200L IS 2.8 which he is thinking of selling.
It is mush sharper than the one I sold before the holidays and it focuses much better on the 1DIII than the 70-200L IS F4 I sold last week.

Here are four test shots with 800L + 1.4xTC MkIII (on 1DsMkII) just to satisfy my curiosity.
I have used that lens/TC combo very seldom, and that is not likely to change. The bare 800L is plenty long for my purposes.
#1...handheld lens/camera
#2,3 and 4.....monopod used
