Nice shots agentbird & Carl !
agentbird, I'm considering a 105mm VR. Would be interested to understand why you don't like yours on the D800e.
Carl, I'm constantly amazed by how well some of the older MF Nikon lenses perform with the D800e. Your first shot proves that once again.
I just don't feel it's that sharp compared to some of my other lenses, 85 1.4G, 24G, 24-70 for example are all sharper. I'm also not used to the focal length for macro, have been using the old 60mm D for several years and have been very happy. Have lent it to a friend for a while and haven't had the time to try it on the D800E yet but will give it a go soon.
I actually kind of like the short working distance on the 60mm and find it easier to hand hold and focus than the 105VR. When I shoot macro I usually use the R1-C1 kit with everything from 1-6 heads on depending on the light I want. Therefore I have been able to try the 105 at almost every aperture, and so far the results have been a little unimpressive.
So far 3 of my lenses have been disappointing on the D800E, 105VR, 50mm 1.4G and 45 pc-e with much tilt or shift applied.
I used to own a 105 VR but sold it a while ago. After seeing how sharp the 85G was with the D800e I was thinking about giving the 105 a try and also read somewhere that 105 is one of the highest resolving lenses on the D800. Think I'll stick with my Zeiss 100 and Sigma 150 macro lenses both of which I'm very very happy with. Thanks for saving me some money
No, I haven't tried any of those. I need a 50mm with internal focusing, a moving front element would not work with my makeshift ring light. As it is mounted on the filter threads.
I'm tempted to try out the 50mm 1.8G to see if it is any better than the 1.4.
After comparing the quality of the shots from the 85 1.4G and the 50 1.4G, I almost never use the 50 anymore unless it is to shoot with the ring light.
