Yeah, that's sort of my thoughts. Just sit and wait. Either this will get cheaper, or a better alternative.
Or it will be out of stock for most of the year keeping the price high (wasn't this true with a 5DII?)
and the next camera announced by Canon will be either new Rebel, new 60D or 7D II

You mean the 70D? It's bad enough when people ask me what kind of camera I have (7D).

I was an early adopter for the 5D and 5D II but I think I will sit this one out, because (a) I think it's overpriced, and (b) I do believe Canon will announce a new higher-megapixel body (3D form) later this year, probably in Photokina. I can then decide between the new body and a lower-priced 5D III - as I am sure the price will drop come September. If I pick up a 5D III now I won't be able to upgrade to the new body, so it makes a lot of sense (to me) to wait another 6 months. ...Show more →
I agree Bobby, I see a real chance for some new bodies this fall. At worse you can pickup a 5D3 latter with the benefit of real world feed back.
The 5DIII specs are what I've been waiting for to make the switch to FF.
Unfortunately, the price is not right for me at this time.
The good news is that we know how Canon handles mispriced products: they offer double rebates on them.
And by the look of things, there will be triple rebates on the 5DIII in two years time .
As of today, Canon U.S.A. has this notice posted: *The EOS-1D X has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. These devices are not and may not be offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.
Since I don't see this on the Canon Canada site, it may be released here (and elsewhere) first.
Definitely looks like a great fit for my needs. It's a bit rich for my blood, though, and my 5DmkII+7D combo is still making beautiful pictures. I'll wait until the price drops.
For now, I've picked up a different "5" to quench my new gear cravings... the Sony Nex 5n.
Yes, it will be interesting to see how long the $3500 price remains. I'm also heard rumblings that the Mk II will stick around for a while at a lower price.

+1 on B&H having great customer service. Of course, there are isolated incidences of employees misshandling a situation, just as there's customers that can never be made happy.....Jim
+1 for BH.
I'm going to join the chorus. I order from BH and Adorama and I've found both of them great to deal with. BH get most of my business now since they have shipping and Canadian taxes etc, sorted out and charged at source. Still way cheaper than any Canadian store.

Try living in Australia, here its $4,200-$4,400 AUD. Thats another $1000 over what you US guys would be paying. Apparently they're stuck in the 90's before our dollar became stronger the the US dollar. I guess Canon Australia think they can rip us off because we're so far away from the rest of the world. Great business model Canon
I just went into one of the major camera retailers in town and they are taking 5D MkIII pre-orders at $4,399. That includes local sales tax (GST) so, for comparison to the US price that's $4,000. At current exchange rate that's US$4293. I asked about the 1DX and was told they didn't have a firm price but Canon Australia was indicating that it would be around $9000 (US$9,660)! If that's right then they've lost me.
Of course, this is nothing surprising, I was in there to buy the 85mm f/1.2 because they gave me the best non-grey market price I could find at $2,470 (US$2,650).
This may be a stupid question, but can the 5DIII JUST use SD cards? And what are the chances of a preorder being fulfilled if I put in my order later rather than now.

If it's like the 1D series it'll provide menu options to take either and/or both, one for jpg and the other for RAW, simultaneously or separate, etc........

I shoot RAW only and I was wondering I should pick up some CF cards if I end up having this camera. Would SD-card-only work just fine? Or are CF cards a better solution?
What time did preorders open at B&H. Was it actually the evening of march 1st? I was on vacation and only got onto the internet the morning of March 2nd and preordered around 4:30AM PST. Just trying to figure out how far down the potential list I may be.

I would say either is fine but you might start a new thread about it......you could also set the camera to write to both, having one for a backup.........

It started within minutes of the announcement. Look at the time stamp of Fred's pinned post - I had my order in within a minute of it (and I checked earlier and they didn't have it yet).
