p.4 #1 · How many pixels do you want for 5D III

For most things in life, a single figure is not an adequate measure of anything.

There are, of course, some exceptions. For example, a mere binary figure can be an important measure of some things like: do I have a camera that can take good pictures, am I still alive, is my creativity really limited by my hardware or am I just not trying hard enough?

Don't get me wrong. I think the Nikon D800 sounds wonderful and, if I had 10 Nikon lenses I'd probably be ordering one. But, as it is I have 10 Canon lenses, I'll just wait around

I'm glad that you are trying to improve your photographic talent. But that have nothing to do with the question I asked Phil

What I really want is state of the art AF, then better high ISO performance. As for MP, anything above 18 MP will be fine for me.

When I look at my A2 prints from the 5DII, thinking what camera sensor related quality parameters that could possibly enhance the print, the most frequent ones are color sensitivity/accuracy and resolution.

For the people who only want 20 mpix...what is missing from the 1dx for you?

Too expensive, it's also big and heavy but money is the main factor here; at least for me.

That's it....after the D800 release for $3k, who the heck is going to buy the 1Dx for $6K?!

I am I really can't see why Canon shooters should stop buying it because of the D800

People who want what the 1DX has and the D800 doesn't. Exactly what that is is their business not mine.

I want two bodies with different sensors - seriously!

1. First would use the 1Dx sensor (or similar) and have very high ISO capability combine with a 7ish FPS. Lot of Nikon users would be drooling for it just as a lot of Canon users are drooling for a D800. Great event camera!

2. Second would get a 36mp sensor, slower FPS rate.

Of course both would need a decent AF system rather than relying on using the one from the 20D.

As a seasoned animal health care professional, I can appreciate the value of this.

It is quite nice to be able to do a cursory dental exam in this manner as opposed to the older, much closer method

Don't mean to be rude, but you need to think this one through a bit. You will certainly see far more 1Dx's at the Olympics, Presidential press conferences, etc. The D800 is a marvelous camera but given the choice to shoot it or a 1Dx at the Penn Relays or any other sporting event I am choosing the 1Dx every, and I mean every, time.

For people who are remotely uploading their files on a deadline, the idea of a 36mp file is not very attractive. For people who need deep buffers and high FPS rates the idea of a 36mp file is not very attractive. For people working on deadlines off of notebooks, the idea of hundreds of 36mp files is downright frightening. For people needing high ISO capability the 1Dx is much more appealing. The list goes on. Different cameras for different uses. Both have the potential to be truly excellent.

I would like to see the same pixel density as the D800, but with a full 24x36mm sensor.

Seriously, what's with all those funky sensor dimensions (23.9x36, 24x35.9) Nikon keeps coming up with? Why won't Sony let them have full-frame chips?

That poor model, having every pore, hair, and speck of plaque inspected by thousands of curious photographers around the world. I hope she's not too self-conscious.

It's clear that canon will not fall behind nikon - they've updated their most popular glass for much higher resolution for a good reason. There will be a canon 30+mp monster coming soon, which will have 5 fps and better AF than the 5d2 had, but NOT pro-level AF. No weather seals, no popup flash, but better video and moderately improved ISO (and noise handling).

I already often shoot my 5d2 in mraw; if I were to upgrade at some point it would be for better AF and not for pixels I don't need.

You're going to get 40MP if CR is correct ...sooner or later.

Sorry, but isn't this exactly what the D800 has with 51 AF points....I would consider this pro-level. If Canon does not deliver the same soon and starts crippling the AF again, they are done, finito!

High resolution works for me because it opens up the possibility of a "one camera fits all" option. Since I enjoy wildlife photography, having a 30mp + camera allows cropping to match my 7d (close enough) since I can't afford a longer lens than 100-400.

I really like the idea of the DX crop mode because it would make framing the subject much easier. It always frustrates me when people suggest that everyone should shoot high MP FF and crop. Ever try getting an eye in focus when it is a dot in the viewfinder? A FF around 30MP with mRaw and a mode similar to nikons DX crop mode would be perfect FOR ME.
