What Canon offers in MP for 5D III would have been set a long time ago IMO. So unless they got wind of 36MP from Nikon a long time ago, I can't see them jumping to 30MP+. It's too late to be reactionary now.

Going by this photo from the D800 .... I want at least 30MP!

That sample doesn't really show much advantage in detail over lower MP cameras, but I'd still take 30 or 40 MP if offered, if only for the landscape or macro situations where I can work carefully with the best lenses, or shots where I know I'll need to crop (wildlife, FL limited). It might become the first body where I'd actually bother to shoot mRaw or sRaw when I know that's all I'll ever want from those shots.
I have mostly manual focus lenses now, so AF is not a high priority in design. Of course better is better, but what would be a lot more useful to me is improvements in the Live View LCD resolution. Other than that overall resolution, dynamic range and low noise/high ISO.

Ok Nikon has dropped the MP bomb on Canon and some are already predicting Canon's death. So what do people really want to see in the 5D mk III? I've given ranges rather than a specific MP count, to smooth out variations.
Personally I'd be happy with option 2 or 3, but above all I want the overall response and speed of camera greatly improved and brand new AF. I don't want to see 30MP+ at all.
I didn't give an option for a low pixel count like 12-16MP as IMO that will never, ever, happen; we've moved on and I think the performance of the 18MP sensor will be more than good enough for those that want a blend of low noise, detail, file size etc...Show more →
Imo, not only the number of pixels we want but also the performance of it as well. Right now, i don't think canon has any glue how to do it right in short period of time. They need to out source their ASIC platform to any better party than their own. They can't even build 21mp right, just think about it.

If you think Canon would ever do that you'll be disappointed and might as well buy Nikon D800 now. Canon has it's own fab and will never depend on someone else for the DSLR market.

Yup, canon has stucked with their own game last ten years. Others now has low cost high performance ASIC platform(s) to deliver their sensor thicky juices. This is one of the reasons 1Dx was born. There is always some engineering issues with re-usable or some variation of software and hardware from one model to another, it never works in the long run but delay and frustration. Canon enginnering has been constrainted themself with their old tech modeling. They have a huge load but no cargo to lift it off. Forget about your "dream" 5d3 for now. it might be happen but not the way you really want it, give them couple years.
I think mid-20's would be enough MP for over 90% of us. I can't recall the last time I read that an actual 5DII user pined for more MP.
If the next 5D gets at least 7D-level AF and a small bump in FPS, then Canon will have effectively produced what the D700 replacement should have been and will have buggered Nikon at their own game.
So sayeth my crystal ball. Or is it a rock of crack...?

Whoa. So it's 4fps FX and 4.6 DX? One would expect more. But I'd take the 36MP even at 3fps, so I'll be big time disappointed when the 5D3 comes out.
Nope. It's 4fps in FX and then 5fps in dx with the grip. It's only 6 fps in DX with the grip AND with a D4 battery or AA batteries or plugged into AC.
