40 drigs i hear you. The DX crop mode would be truly nice IF the viewfinder was magnified. I am under the impression it isn't. It will only show you a smaller VF. So the same dot appears. I may be wrong hopefully.

D800 will need beast of a system. My new computer I'm building after Ivy Bridge ships will be 32GB, and I will OC it to 4.5GHz and be using SSD for main drive. This should handle whatever is announced for 5D III.
The one reason a 30MP+ 5D III would be nice if it has the pro AF (AF @ f/8) and say 8 fps, it'll mean I can sell 5D II and 7D and use the one camera for everything from landscape to fast action wildlife and sports. No need for high MP crop camera any more IMO.
25.6MP with a much weaker AA filter would be my ideal at the moment. If you can't get good detail from that with some of the glass now available, 36MP won't help much. Already 5D II can get excellent detail with good glass....Show more →
Larger SSD is very expensive, smaller will not have much cash space for photoshop

+1 But I don't think Canon can or will ignore Nikon so I suspect it'll be 30+
Yes, I think Canon's will not only have 30+, but it'll have more than Nikon's. I think Nikon did it to have an impact on the market by being the first one to show their products. Imagine if Canon was the first one to present cameras and include more of those particular so sought after characteristics.
For me, perhaps 24 MP is perhaps more than enough enough. Most of the work I do requires pictures not larger than 8x10", (or A4). Sometimes pictures as large as 14 x 16", or 20 x 24" for some clients.
What would be interesting for me, and I don't know if it is possible or reasonable is: "variable raw". I don't photoshop yet. I work with different designers and they do it, before the work is given to our final client. I must also say, I am not a full time photographer. I have available to work with one 6MP and one 18MP cameras. For some jobs I use one, and for other ones I use the other ones. The designer tells me before hand what size of "raw" file he wants to work with. I am not very "techie", but if one could variate the "rawness" of the file, we may have one, instead of two cameras.

As many as possible. I love the way Nikon split the lines - fast, high ISO D4 and slow, high MP D800E. If I can get 40MP I'll take them.

Megapixels, as stated so many times, is not the most relevant single figure which determines quality of image print.
Camera manufacturers did a Very Bad Thing by making everyone focus on one value which is not the be all and end all of image quality
Thing is, the D800E ISO 100 pixels aren't of terrible quality. And for me, that's what matters. I have a fast, high ISO camera with the 1DX. I equally need (actually, far more need) a camera of ultra high rez at ISO up to 400. Sorta like the D800E. I have a sense that I'm not alone with that need, given that NPS says that the D800E is sold out until at least June.

One camera for all is very attractive. On the other hand the 12mp of my 5Dc has always been more then enough so isn't 36 mp overkill ? Maybe 36mp would have more con's then pro's.
Combining a 18 mp 5DIII with a 18 mp 7D(II) maybe is a better solution for me.

that is what i am afraid of, instead of giving us near nikon MP and say a nice all around 6fps they will go crazy with 40+ MP and then like 3fps or crippled AF or something. of course for some that would be best

Do the pixels look terrible though with the D800?
And what if the column ADC means it actually has 2 stops better DR at lowest ISO than the lower MP Canon?

That poor model, having every pore, hair, and speck of plaque inspected by thousands of curious photographers around the world. I hope she's not too self-conscious.
I don't think she has to worry considering all the comments about how she is the hottest of the sample models.
What I did is just comparing processing times and somehow predict how long I would spend with this camera and my current computer.
Fairness is out of the question
My computer costs around 2.2K + 3.3K makes for some though against the 1DX.
If the 5DIII goes to 40MP I would be happy with it but I would we using SRAW most of the time and using the full size RAW for some landscapes or macro work.

I think $400 on 240GB SSD is not too much to pay given the performance increase you will gain over a standard HD. It's amazign what new life it can breathe into a system. Obviously you don't store your photos on the SSD, but the OS and your most used apps etc.

I doubt we will see the 5D III be good enough for fast action or have the speed, but if it did it would be welcome. I would also be amenable to a 21MP 5D III and a much improved 7D II.
I want a d800 that takes canon lenses. d800 AF down to f8, has pro autofocus, has 7 shot bracketing, and has on board flash to act as master. the extra pixels will allow me to sell my 7d and use this as my birding/wildlife lens. I also want the faster fps when I shoot in DX format (not gonna happen, I know). I really want a d800 with canon mount.
lol.
You can "want" all you want, but the camera is already being field tested and will come out soon the way they designed it at least 2 years ago.
I honestly don't understand the mp race. Most of you don't make any money from your photography or even print much, yet you want 40mp camera?! Is that the "I want a big penis to look cool"?
I print 20x30' and 40x30' on a monthly basis(with occasional 40x60s) and my files are between 7-12mp. All prints look great! Heck, I've printed 2 billboards in the past with a 5mp file from a 10D!
I use 5DII @RAW,but if sRAW was around 14-16mp, I would be shooting at that, since it would speed up my editing process quite a bit. And if your is excuse is "I wanna crop". Well...if you need to crop a 40mp file then perhaps you need to learn to compose and then you won't need to crop that much...
I have a new computer system that I just bought a few months ago and it still has issues with the 21mp RAW files. I can only imagine how slow it would be with 40mp files!
And for those who say, I'll just shoot in sRAW...Well, just so you know, sRAW is so much worse than RAW. The amount of information in sRAW files are significantly less. During editing it barely better than a jpeg file.
There was a thread about it about 2 years ago and I provided samples. If you don't believe me, just do a test yourself!

Blame Nikon's stupid F mount. Canon had the sense to bring in EF mount many years ago even though it p!ssed people off. We can use Nikon glass quite easily on Canon.
I want:
30+ mps
native iso 25600.
better AF than current 5d2.
5fps (if i need more, other body will handle the job)
Video AF, capabilities like Nikon D4 (to be use with steadicam pilot+cant afford a puller or a space for 1)
Willing to pay up to $3500.....but yeah. cheaper is better.
