How hard is it going to be to get one when they are released? If I haven't preordered one yet, am I screwed?
I pre-ordered on the 8th but am thinking I was premature. If Canon announces something similar I will stay with Canon. Just sold a lot of. Canon glass so I am less tied to the system than usual at the moment. There might be others like me who are willing to give up their brand new D800 depending on Canon's announcements over the next month.

Sorry Bill I do not want to come off as harsh, I too have made the mistake in the past.
No worries Dan, when I saw your post I felt really bad because I had forgotten that is part of how Fred supports the site, in the past I've purchased software from him and also the B&S forum subscription also helps support the site.
Very tempted! But man it would slow things down with those file sizes. Just for kicks I downloaded one of the 23mb JPEGS and ran noise reduction on it. What would normally take 5 seconds took like 20.
I got my name on a list at my local camera store here in Austin As I preordered the D800E today. Precision camera & video is where I got it from. They are tight with the Nikon and they usually get the new cameras in much sooner than B&H does and I think I'm #13 on the list. Getting your gear from a local camera store is good, I know you have to pay Tax, but the preorder list is much shorter and you'll get your gear faster. !3 people (so far) is better than up to 300 people (or more) nationwide. Just a thought, some of you may want to think about that. Who knows, I could be wrong.....

Yes, but I assume that is only for members of the Nikon Pro Service and only full time working pros can join that. I did and it was not easy.
In fact I was an NPS member before coming to work at B&H. When it was time to renew they refused since my B&H salary meant I was not making the majority of my income as a photographer.
I originally got the January 3, 2013 e-mail for both my D800 and D800E pre-order. Yesterday, I went in confirmed my shipping speed to 1 day and the dates for both changed to March 21, 2012. I just got another e-mail today for the D800E:
