ISO - Why do you assumed the fictional Canon will be superior? Nikon have been spanking Canon for a long time in this area.
Build - The D700 is meant to have a body like a tank, why will the D800 differ? The 5DII is fine, but nothing special.
AF - The 7D AF doesn't hold a candle to the high-end Nikon 3500 AF.
This is from a Canon shooter.
ISO... Canon vs Sony sensors, I'll bank the Canon being a tad better. Nothing huge, but noticible.
Build... Both sufficient for the target market.
AF... Nikon might be a bit better, but again, I expect the Canon to improve much more than the Nikon did this time around. Nikon's advantage will shrink here.
Price? The D800 will surely be more, which is fair given the better AF system.
ditto. I am waiting to see what's coming. I need a new camera body for this wedding season. I could go one of several directions....and am just waiting to figure out which!
5D3 NEEDS to be:
-22mp minimum
-Pro AF (minimum 7D)
-all the new features of 1DX
-don't care about frame rate
-native 12800 ISO
-$4k or less (i'll buy two at that price though)
Otherwise the D800 is going to be king of FF cameras. Their video format is equal if not better than Canon now, and the 5D2 was Canon's cash crop...now that people have an alternative to a cheap FF HDSLR, Canon must respond.

12mp, sorry, not interested one bit - also $5k
D3s is not 5K...
It will certainly be interesting to see what Canon does. No one has reliable specs for the Canon which either means they are keeping it locked up tight...or else it will not be coming out for a while.

All of what you said shouldn't be unreasonable to expect. However if this camera comes in at $1000 more than the D800, it would be a HUGE mistake for Canon.
This camera needs to be less than the D800 ($3000) unless Canon comes up huge with a new AF system - which given their track record I'm doubting.
Look, to match the D800's price the 5Dx will need to have: 36mpx, dual cards, 100% viewfinder, pro AF from the 1Dx, pro build and weather proofing. Now it isn't going to happen therefore it either has to be significantly cheaper or however 'sufficient' the specs, you're still paying the same price for a lot fewer features and that is what I was suggesting would not make sense.

Who would buy a D3s period now?
Because I do not need 36mps cannot afford more computer stuff/ cf cards and because the high iso of the D3s will still be better than the D800.
More than likely I will be selling 2 d3 (s) and getting a D3s for myself and D800 for the wife.
for me 36 mp's is freaking useless. More than likely it will become the backup body.

...
This coming from the guy who shoots LARGE FORMAT.
...
I got $10.00 right here that says that if the D800 delivers on the quality, Iso performance (>D700 @ pixel level) and DR ... we will soon see Doug finding ways to create MASTODONTIC prints for his clients with epicsauce resolution

The current cheapest DSLR from Nikon (the D3100) scores better than every single non-APS-H or FF camera Canon sells in noise levels. That includes the 7D, which costs more than twice as much. Every single Nikon FF camera scores better in noise than the best Canon FF camera. If there's one reason to go with Nikon over Canon, it's that Nikon pays far more attention to high ISO performance than Canon does.

To tell you the truth no one really prints large because they cannot afford a print...
I RARELY sell any kind of prints at all.
10.00 actually says that I will buy 2. One for backup and one to replace my 5D. I have been waiting to go all Nikon and now it seems like I will be able to.
Did not want 36mp but oh well. It has video which I need for Nepal.
I will end up with 2 d800's, D3s, D3, and a d70 or something in case the shiz hits the fans.
Sad thing is is that you can still get more resolution out of a 4x5 scan than a 36mp digicam
....wait...for me that is not that sad
The D800 is really a $7,000 - $8,000 camera. That's after I factor in the new Mac Pro's, hard drives, NAS upgrades, and CF/HCSD cards I'll need to run the massive files through.
Studio photographers, landscape photographers, and film makers are probably pretty happy. But wedding shooters were left out of the loop on this one.
