To tell you the truth no one really prints large because they cannot afford a print...
I RARELY sell any kind of prints at all.

I sell 30x40 and 40x60 all the time, so extra resolution is welcome. Heck, I've printed (2x) 40x60 and (4) 30x40 on my printer since January...

I sell 20x30's and even the small raw 1 on the 5dII can handle that just fine...the full raw has always been plenty for 30x40. (I have yet to print a 40x60)

I would love to know how it will compare to the d700 in low light situations.
I am in the market for a new camera but low light capabilities are going to make my decision for me.

At the same resolution (12MP) expect the D800 to be substantially better. At full resolution (100% magnification), expect the D700 to be cleaner.

What really matters here is performance at any given size, not performance at 100% like most people focus on.

I am talking about a 4x5 print.
Hell I can barely afford to make one for myself! You want to know how much a 40x60 fiber print costs...? haha
Good luck finding someone to print that size too

Buy ya I hear ya spencer! I am glad you are coming over!

Otherwise the D800 is going to be king of FF cameras. Their video format is equal if not better than Canon now, and the 5D2 was Canon's cash crop...now that people have an alternative to a cheap FF HDSLR, Canon must respond.

Not sure where this came from ..... maybe from the d7000... but the D3s did not hold up to 5Dmkii or 1DIV in video.

Nikon is still playing catch-up. Looks like the D800 is that tool.

The D4 video quality compared with the 1DX is about equal, its quite impressive. The D3s was not, never mentioned that. Not to mention uncompressed video out through HDMI, which Canon does not do. I know a lot of Canon HD video shooters drooling over these new simple features that Canon simply has ignored.

Uncompressed HDMI out in both the D4 and D800 is not catchup, it's serious overtake. Meanwhile canon is busy protecting their C300, etc, sigh....

Don't forget that the D800's AF is roughly the same as the D700's - so Nikon didn't exactly reinvent the wheel this time around.

The D800 has the same AF module as the D4, which can focus at -2 EV (1 less stop of light vs D3s) so it is better than the D700.

Also, 14-bit FX lossless compressed RAW is approx. 41.3 Megs (http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d800/features04.htm)

The D4/D800 ... agree on the video with uncompressed HDMI.

I think it is good for nikon to step up their game. Good for everybody.

I think I want one but that 36MP is what's keeping me from doing it. More thought needed.

This is taken from another thread.

Many many people have said that 36mp is too much and they wouldn't want or need such high resolutions all the time. The interesting thing is that you have 18 possible resolutions you can choose...

FX format (36 x 24): 7,360 x 4,912 (L), 5,520 x 3,680 (M), 3,680 x 2,456 (S)
1.2x (30 x 20): 6,144 x 4,080 (L), 4,608 x 3,056 (M), 3,072 x 2,040 (S)
DX format (24 x 16): 4,800 x 3,200 (L), 3,600 x 2,400 (M), 2,400 x 1,600 (S)
5:4 (30 x 24): 6,144 x 4,912 (L), 4,608 x 3,680 (M), 3,072 x 2,456 (S)
FX-format photographs taken in movie live view*: 6,720 x 3,776 (L), 5,040 x 2,832 (M), 3,360 x 1,888 (S)
DX-format photographs taken in movie live view*: 4,800 x 2,704 (L), 3,600 x 2,024 (M), 2,400 x 1,352 (S)

Don't want 36mp's, switch to medium FX and enjoy 20mp, switch the small and you have effectively 9mp.

If I bought the D800 I would probably use it in medium FX mode but crank it up when I was doing some serious landscape or studio work. I think the camera is more versatile than people give it credit for.

Canon Pants,

all the sizes you mentioned are most likely available in JPG but not in RAW.

A lof of us like RAW.

Not that I wouldn't mind de-slaving myself from that additional step... can't say I really need the "save yo ass" features of RAW as much as I may have needed them 2 years ago...

All of those different sizes are for JPEG only. Your only two options in RAW are 36MP FX or 15MP DX.

The raw compression (uncompressed, lossless and compressed) though seems like Nikon's version of sRaw, given the file sizes, no?

From the D3 Manual:

Lossless
compressed
(default)
NEF images are compressed using a reversible
algorithm, reducing file size by about 20–40%
with no effect on image quality.

Compressed
NEF images are compressed using a nonreversible
algorithm, reducing file size by about
40–55% with almost no effect on image quality.

Uncompressed
NEF images are not compressed. Recording time
increases slightly.

Stupid question:

has it in fact been confirmed that the various sizes are indeed only available for JPG?

That's what I would assume (as most would) because it's been the de facto standard all along... but I haven't actually read it (yet) anywhere where it says that the various size options are ONLY available in JPG (I did read that the JPG has the usual three quality levels of course).

...

So... show me where it says RAW only available in full size FX or full size DX

Did the D3x not have an sraw mode?

I can't find a D800 user manual anywhere to confirm that yet, but based on the D3 and D700 manuals I'd venture to guess that's correct. I'd expect the NEF compression to be as good or better, though.

D3x had the same compression schemes as the D3. They don't call it sRaw, but it has a similar net effect of smaller file sizes without compromising the image quality for both 12 and 14b.

The D800 has 3 crop modes: FX, 1.2, and DX (1.5). All of these can be RAW, and can also be compressed NEFs.

1.2 Is an interesting option.

edit: there is also a 5:4 crop but not sure what the deal is with that one RAW-wise.
