p.1 #1 · What Workshop Are You Doing this Off Season?
Now that the 2011 season is winding down, I'm curious to what workshops you are considering for this off season? I'm only aware of a few different ones out there, so I'm counting on you all to list some here. I figure this thread could be a good source of info on existing workshops out there for those of us looking to grow.
Tell us where you're going and maybe a 'why' you decided to choose the particular workshop you chose!

If I found someone close to my level and goals, I'd be willing to share instructor and model costs for a day of shooting to improve my portfolio.
Personally, I'm looking at buying a 1-on-1 session for 4 hours at $375 or something like that, w/ the content geared towards event shooting (weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, etc.). I've not yet had time to really look into specific workshops, but I've read that Neil Van Niekerk (author of "On-Camera Flash") in NYC (well, ok, Northern NJ) has a program like this. I liked a lot of the shooting techniques in David Ziser's book "Captured by the Light" as well, but I'm not sure if he works 1-on-1.
Even if it were more time for the same money, or even less money for more time, I just don't think I'd learn as much if it's a huge crowd w/ a really high student-instructor ratio. I've gone to some local Meetup groups and it was just a feeding frenzy of GWC's snapping away machine-gun style. Admittedly, it only cost $12, so I got what I paid for!

A week of golf in Scottsdale followed, perhaps, by a three day high performance driving class. It's not going to do a thing to improve my photography but it will allow me a chance to unwind and enjoy myself. I think that this is just as important as taking a photography workshop.
Looking ahead to 2012... Did it have a lot of workshops relevant to improving technique and honing marketing, or was it "poetic", flowery, "inspirational" type of stuff?

I went to the Foundations Conference last month. Why? Because Fearless photogs are awesome and I want to really develop those fearless skills.

Um... I want to say somewhere in between. It's not gear-centric technique... but more thought-centric technique. They focus more on stalking moments, being more aggressive with getting the shot, being more creative in general with a PJ slant. Does that make sense?

Yes, it does make sense- and it sounds rather practical. Perhaps there were other items addressed like, "What to do when you're intentionally shoved by a Guest w/ a Camera" (it happened to me once!), how to get all the guests looking into YOUR lens instead of the 5 or 6 iPhones to your side, etc.
Did they say when the 2012 workshop would be?

We are going to Mystic.... it'll be our first time and we're looking forward to it.
Who's going to be in Mystic or are you just visiting? I use to live there. If you have time take a 20 minute drive and have dinner at Paul's Pasta Shop in New London. They hand make pasta fresh to order. It's incredible.

Mystic Seminars is in Mystic. The list of speakers is pretty long and includes many of the "NAMES" including Jerry and Melissa Ghionis, Becker, Dave and Quin Cheung, Ben and Erin Chrisman, The Wed Rockers, etc, etc.... the list is quite long.
I'll keep that in mind although the seminars supplies catered food that is supposed to be off the hook.

I highly recommend Foundation for those who are at the stage where they feel that everything technical (gear, products, business, marketing) is working for the most part, and want to concentrate on their storytelling.

Foundations Workshop is and has been at the top of my list for several years. It's coming up the the $$$$ that's seems to be the issue. Ugh. I'm sure it's worth it and I would've done it last year had it not been for this oil spill fiasco.
