I suppose they had to make a D3s killer (something the 1D Mark IV is not). Kind of unfortunate this didn't come out a year and a half ago, however.
Well, the 7D was released 2 years after the D300. Yet, till now (2 years after 7D was released), Nikon has yet to announce the proper successor (the D300s does not qualify) to the D300.
Looks nice I guess and could lead to better things in the future........but does nothing for me. Really wish they would make a smaller pro body.....I`m getting old and am tired of carrying a cinder block around.....

So, I say it's better late than never.
I sort of thought the mindset behind the D300s was to be the 7D competitor,.

The 1Ds sells, don't kid yourself. They sold a lot of 1Ds bodies when they were released. The issue they had was sticking the same sensor in the 1Ds and expecting it to sell.
I think they realize they can make the 5D and 1D the same sensor but not the 1Ds. You make that 1Ds a 48mp or 52mp camera and people are still going to flock to it for the $9000 price point.
well they sell at small fractions of any other model, very small fractions but yeah they may still make one, only the press release said they amalgamated the two into the x series so maybe not
anyway my call earlier in the night had been for (with two announced later):
a 4k vid, 45MP, 6.3fps, top AF, large body, 10 grand beast = 1DM1 MP and reach and video res beast (video might a touch of moire)
a 2k vid, 18mp, top AF, large body, 12-14fps beast, 4.5-5.5grand = 1DV speed and video quality (if 'only' 2k beast)
a 2k vid, 24-31mp, top AF, 6.3fps, small body beast, 2.5-3.5 grand = 5D3 reasonably speed, reach, top video quality beast (if 'only' 2k)
all FF
but wow that James actually may have gotten the 5D3 for late 2012 correct, yow

I've got to laugh at what some of you expect equipment to cost. I'd like it to be cheaper, but...I don't think we're getting it for that.

OK, I thought I saw a diagram showing that type of AF point layout somewhere. Do you know if they refer to the 7D's f/2.8 x-type points as 'dual' as well?
This is from the 50D/5D II white paper. Goto page 31 for 50D AF description
This is clearly a replacement for the 1D4 for the 2012 olympics, no-one can deny that. The key question is whether all the rumors of the 1Ds line merging was true or not?
The OP is updated with more details from the Japanese detailed spec list.
Note: I can't read japanese, but I believe it is dual CF and no SD slot. This may be wrong.
Let's see, if I sell all of my bodies and lenses I think the 1D-X will be in $ reach. I could hang on to the 18-55 kit lens from my first Rebel so I have some glass for it.
I'm pretty sure this camera is the sole successor to the 1D4 and 1Ds3. Canon wouldn't use a special designation "X" if they intended to keep these product lines separate.
I'm also pretty sure this camera will be a lot more expensive than most of you are hoping. There are *three* DIGIC processors in it--two DIGIC 5, and one DIGIC 4. That is completely unheard of in the history of EOS. There's an entirely new AF sensor with an unheard-of 61 AF points, all cross-type; and that's handled by the DIGIC 4. That's a lot of processing power devoted to just AF and AE; the entire 5D2's image processing system is run off a single DIGIC 4 chip.
Then we need to consider the fact that there hasn't been an update to the 1Ds line in almost four years, and the last one, the 1Ds3, debuted at $8000. People have been waiting for this body and the demand is at record levels. This is the replacement--new, top-of-the-line AF; new metering system; new sensor; unprecedented ISO range; new features across the board. It is absurd to think this is going to be priced at current 1D4 levels, especially considering that the global economy is in the toilet and Canon has been on a strongly increasing price trend for all of its products.
Be prepared for a very, very high price tag on this body. The pixel count is misleading; it may be 18.1 MP but everything else in this body screams pricey. Canon will extract as much money as possible from those who have been dying for a new flagship body and are ready to buy one at any price.
