Yes, 36 MP will soon be considered medium resolution

I'm sure the D4 will be competetive with the 1D-X, having possibly slightly more, or slightly less resolution. The D800 appears to be Nikon's take on a 5D Mark II killer.

Speaking of Nikon, I'd love to see "crop mode" on new Canon DSLRs for using APS-C format glass some of which is pretty unique (or for emergency - a pal of mine used a 17-55 DX lens on his Nikon D3 when his 24-70 was busted, all along until he could afford a new 24-70). Of course the non-Canon glass can be used without problems anyways but you have to crop manually afterwards. Sony A900 did that as well.

Certainly.

I was just funnin' with kewlcanon, as I hardly agree that releasing high resolution cameras is being trapped

Nikon didn't fall into any trap. They are screwd because they are using sony sensors.

I say this camera body at the speed it is shooting now gives hopes that the 5D body I saw shooting around 7-8 frames per second at an NHL hockey game may be real afterall. I could see them releasing a 5D body with this sensor in the 7-8 FPS rate with a 7D or better AF system.

I still think we see another 1D body announced by February that will have 36mp.

$6800 is pretty good price!

With all the improvements over the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, it's an amazing price. $100 LESS than the old camera it replaces and people still whine?

So 3 megapixels less translates to $33.3 per megapixel. Fair price.

I like the direction Canon is heading. Less megapixels, better AF and ISO.
I can't wait for the next 5D and 7D announcements

Nikon uses Sony sensors that are the best in their class, which is pretty much every market segment except the FF+low-light market (D3/D3s), which Nikon supplements with their own technology. That seems more shrewd than screwed on an R&D cost basis.

Not really. It also means when Sony tells them to make their own crap they'll be screwd. It only took them how many years to make a full frame sensor.

Battery grips to add fps is a dumb idea.
garyvot wrote:
It was probably my comment, misinterpreted.

I was expressing the desire for a compact, full frame body having similar specifications, except for framerate. Such a camera would better meet the needs of magazine photojournalists, wedding shooters, event photographers, et al, who don't need 12fps or particularly want to deal with a bulky, conspicuous camera.

However, if it were designed such that adding a "high power" battery grip could bring the framerate up (ala Nikon), then the needs of sports and wildlife shooters could also be satisfied.

As it stands, a lot of folks will have to shoulder on with the 5D Mark II

Why would Sony tell Nikon to make their own crap when Sony is selling huge volumes of high-margin sensors to them? Sony's DSLR/SLT chip volumes will never justify their sensor R&D by themselves without Nikon as a customer.

That is the most unfortunate part in this high-end dSLR/lens business.
Not only technical products and features are being harmonised between those two "competitors" ( ), they also appear to coordinate their prices to our detriment.
Fortunately, we are still left with a freedom of choice.....once prices become overly distasteful, we can walk away from it and chose some other options allbeit perhaps technically less "perfect".

Not so sure they are 'colluding' but they definitely do look at the 'market' to figure out what kind of pricing the market will bear. The rise in value of the Yen certainly doesn't help.

If Canon was actually colluding with Nikon (for a cosy one-two relationship), they wouldn't have bothered putting out what amounts to a press release with a 5 month dry cycle, in effect killing off their 1DIV and 1DsIII sales for nearly half a year.

Canon is quite concerned with what Nikon is doing, given that the D3 and D3s stole the 1DIII and 1DIV's launch thunder previously. I think the D4 will be announced soon, with similar specs, and Canon didn't want to look like a follower by announcing after Nikon.

It's a real simple answer. When Sony ups the ante and wants to take on both Canon and Nikon they will tell Nikon to screw off on make their own stuff. Which will leave them sitting high and dry.

You think Sony wants to sit around 12-15% in the DSLR market. No, they want 40%+.

Not really sure what the issues are with the sensors Nikon uses. If indeed they are Sony thus far they have had better noise control and equal in IQ to anything Canon has put out. With the exception of the D3x which still rains as the best.

No doubt Sony wants to be the market leader in the camera markets they participate. But they're trying to achieve that via total system innovation rather than just sensor R&D (SLT, FW features, form factors, etc...) Why blow off profitable customers who you sell one aspect of your technology to if your success is built on much more than that? Sony can have their cake and eat it to; amortize their sensor R&D on the back of other customers while still profitably competing with them on a system basis.

Sony is a business not a camera gear company. Revenue is there number one concern and sensor sales adds to this revenue. By cutting out the sales of sensors to try and gain a few percentages in market share would be a stupid move. Sony like Nikon and Canon make most of there money on entry level cameras and point and shoots.

It's a real simple thought process Snapsy.

They keep giving sensors to the competitors that keep making cameras that are better than theirs. It's only a matter of time before Sony figures a few things out. Once they can start selling their cameras in a higher volume it'll make more sense to tell Nikon to screw off.
