Any Hi-Rez image samples out there?

All I could find for image sample were these from Canon.

$6800 is pretty good price!

With all the improvements over the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, it's an amazing price. $100 LESS than the old camera it replaces and people still whine?

Or a couple of thousand more than the camera it replaces (1D4).

Price shouldn't matter to you at all!
"Owned lots of gear and made money out of all of it, so who cares?"

Price matters, after all it drives sales doesn't it I love the features and direction of the 1D X with the lower MP and focus on IQ! However, when you talk about the price of a previous 1SDIII you are forgetting that technology is advancing at an exponential rate. Technology becomes twice as fast at a fraction of the cost year after year...don't forget about Canon using the same shell for this body too, this is an old body with new guts. They are saving a ton with tooling/production costs..

Nothing about this camera is revolutionary that warrants a $6800 price tag but I'm sure the weak dollar isn't helping much. The best news about the 1D X is that it will force 1DIV prices down.

As I've mentioned before, once you see the new bodies/specs of the competition I think you reconsider the price point of this body.

Are these samples supposed to impress? They're rather ordinary looking. Canon seems to be taking development and marketing cues from Sigma.

I'm going to get my hands on one for 40 mins on Tuesday at the Pro Solutions show in London, just booked my appointment. They don't say if we can use our own CF cards, apparently they didn't for the last launch according to a chap I chatted to in Jacobs today who was at the Canon show for the last launch, but who knows. I'll see if they can convince me or not.

They probably had to use tiny images to hide the banding

has everyone forgotten the 5D classics's sensor was a sweet spot in Canon's line up with 12 mega pixel large deep well photo sites and the image quality of the 5D classic? with todays technology and those large photo sites the IQ and dynamic range of the 1D X should be outstanding. the 1Ds MKII had 16.7 mp and it took pretty good pics as well. i will replace my high frame rate 40D with the 1D X and wait and see what Canon has to offer in the 5D MKIII.

I suppose they had to make a D3s killer (something the 1D Mark IV is not). Kind of unfortunate this didn't come out a year and a half ago, however.

I love the promise of the new high ISO sensor and AF improvements, but I was sorely hoping for a different form factor: a modular, EOS-1V type design having 5-6fps naked and 10-12fps with a grip. That would have really shaken up the 1-series line.

My best guess is that this camera will be north of $6K, which will make it a difficult purchase to justify from a value standpoint, at least

A grip to speed us the FPS? It's not film.

Someone else agrees! I think that a "motor grip battery thingamajingy" is just stupid.

They keep giving sensors to the competitors that keep making cameras that are better than theirs. It's only a matter of time before Sony figures a few things out. Once they can start selling their cameras in a higher volume it'll make more sense to tell Nikon to screw off.

That's just it, if it's simple and obvious to laymen like us then it must be obvious to Nikon as well. For that strategy to be effective Nikon would have to both be oblivious to the strategy and without the means to design their own sensor should Sony execute it. Nikon's positioning of the D3x/D3/D3s and D7000 relative to the 1Ds/1D and 5D demonstrated their strategy prowess and their D3s/1 sensor designs demonstrate their sensor design abilities.

I work in the semiconductor field and the relationship between Sony/Nikon as supplier and competitor is the industry norm rather than the exception. ASIC R&D is enormously expensive and risky. A single failed launch is enough to make or break a company of moderate size or do a lot of P&L damage to a company the size of Sony. The Machiavellian business strategy you ascribe to Sony is mostly the providence of Hollywood's depiction of the business world.

one odd thing is they claim 18MP was needed because they can't drive more MP at 12fps and yet 7D already does 18MP and 8fps and 1D4 16MP at 10fps and digic 5+ is supposed to be a huge boost relative to past generation compared to the past and yet the 18*12 they get is only the same increase they had in the past so something doesn't add up, maybe the extra jpg CA, DNR etc. takes a lot of power or it was really other factors like chip read and so on

Sorry i think you need to get your facts straight there. It really wouldn't hurt nor their bottom line. Digital cameras make up such a small portion of their annual revenue its arguable they are barely breaking even with the sales they have right now. From Sony's perspective they have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Sure Nikon made the D3s sensor, only took them around what, 8 years to bring together a really good full frame sensor.

When they release the D800 with another Sony sensor it will just go to prove they are still way behind in being able to make these sensors at a reasonable rate.

I also get the feeling Nikon is going to try to push a 24mp D4 that won't have a Nikon sensor.
