Yeah, look at say 7D white paper for high precision AF points.

OK, I thought I saw a diagram showing that type of AF point layout somewhere. Do you know if they refer to the 7D's f/2.8 x-type points as 'dual' as well?

sounds like they radically updated the AF system and this thing has speed

they do now need a higher MP cam but the 1Ds series hasn't made sense for a while, it's been long killed off

and with this new beast doing 12fps and having a crazy fancy AF system they are free to bump 5D series more up
to 1Ds level and could pop in perhaps the 1D4 AF module? and give it maybe 6.3fps? and maybe 24-36MP?

Perfect, now just give me that sensor in the 5D3 with the new AF system....the quote below is the best thing I've seen from canon in years, perhaps they have turned a corner with the MP race and realized we want IQ not MP?

"The new Canon EOS-1D X incorporates a newly developed approximately 18.1-megapixel 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor which, in addition to achieving an optimal sensor size and pixel count balance, effectively makes use of Canon’s proprietary semiconductor technologies to ensure low-noise performance"

+ 18.1 mp !!!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Canon isn't done.

The original ad in the Singaporean newspaper was:

The 1Ds3 has double bump over the pentaprism, like that image. For reference:

And the 1D4:

The 1DX has no double bump, from what we can see of the photo.

edit: My bad, I forgot that the 1Ds1 / 1Ds2 had no bump. Overexcited!

I dont see the 5D being a high MP camera. They will still have a 1D and 1Ds. Just like Nikon does a D3 and D3x. It may just mean no more 1.3x crop sensor in a 1D body.

$5499 for this Camera.

$9499 for it's big brother.

$3499 for the 5D Mark III which I believe will use the same sensor.

There will always be a fast 1D and a big megapixel 1D. This is not the big megapixel 1D. Many people have been hearing info of a 48mb camera in the line.

Those prices would be closer to reality if the year were 2006, unfortunately in 2011 you need to apply a +20% factor to account for the stronger yen.

None of the other 1Ds cameras did either...

Not sure of reason for extra bump, but maybe new pentaprism is a tad smaller since they've found a way to keep brightness the same with a smaller prism? Or it is ever so slightly duller?

I suppose they had to make a D3s killer (something the 1D Mark IV is not). Kind of unfortunate this didn't come out a year and a half ago, however.

I love the promise of the new high ISO sensor and AF improvements, but I was sorely hoping for a different form factor: a modular, EOS-1V type design having 5-6fps naked and 10-12fps with a grip. That would have really shaken up the 1-series line.

My best guess is that this camera will be north of $6K, which will make it a difficult purchase to justify from a value standpoint, at least for me.

yup as long long ago predicted at Northlight, the digic v will be fast enough to fully read and bin and sample the sensor for a huge jump in video quality

sounds like a great cam (other than the huge size and slightly low reach)

but the 5D3 has lots of freedom now and I think it could well get the full 1D4 AF system (and we can always hope this super new system, although that may be wishful thinking I bet), 6.3fps and 24-36MP

and you see how the FF mirrorless rumors came from the mirror locked up mode that gives 14fps and the 2 stops more from the earlier CR FF 1D rumor, etc. and the 'CR dork's talk of mid october announcement that was ridiculed by the haters

Who is this for? Sports? Journalists? Wildlife? Am I right? I mean, a wedding/portrait photographer would truly benefit from the 1DX, sure, but this body isn't really marketed to them, right?

I've always wanted to make the jump from the 5D to the 1D, but right now I feel a little underwhelmed. I'm sure once the reviews are out and I see some sample images I'll feel differently

That is an interesting observation, UNLESS, this is by chance a 1Ds successor. They could be doing a drastic overhaul of the lineup.

Still makes more sense for there to be a high megapixel 1Ds body though.

I think 2011 reality is a bit tighter budgeted than 2006, yen and exchange rates aside Time tells.
