I enjoyed this thread alot and was sorry to see it get archived. I posted some shots of mine there which I didn't post in the alt forum.

Auto meter? If you mean the camera can select a proper exposure in e.g. Av mode you're correct.
With a Canon camera there is no electronic connection with the lens unless you glue a EXIF-chip on yourself (~10Euro).
But yes, these lenses are very good. I have the 35 and 12. I've also tried the 85. All are amazing performers - regardless of the price. Build quality (for the ones I have) is good. Better than an ordinary EF, but below an L. But since they have not been around that long no-one knows how they last or wear.

he means on nikon cameras, which can mechanically control aperture. nikon mount versions have the lever allowing the camera to control aperture and use all auto metering modes. this is not available to canon users because eos cameras can only control aperture electronically, and not available to sony users even though it is possible because they don't have enough market share (ok i'm just guessing this last bit).

Aha, I see. Good for Nikons but I dont mind using the ring. But I do wonder why Samyang dont put a chip on them, providing EXIF (incl set Aperture). The effort isnt exactly rocket science.

Note that the fisheye is a specialty lens, it wont share any relevant properties with their grown up siblings :-)

they'd need to put a motor in the lens for aperture.

ah, i see what you mean. making electronics to read the aperture setting, is probably more effort that they'd be willing to do, but just sticking a chip on with the wide open aperture would be easy. you can always do that yourself to for $11.
To be honest, those samples make me want to get a Zeiss ZA 24mm F2 SSM. It seems like it's a close up shallow DoF WA Snap shot look and I imagine SSM focus would be so much better for that.

This is just... woeful. They're making great (more or less) optics that sell by the boatloads but they can't be bothered to invest into just about any electronic stuffing.
I'd still rather give up on daily icecream and scrape for the 24 L...

I guess it depends of your shooting style but that doesn't really bother me. If it does bother you though you could also get a nikon body. Samyang lenses have auto-aperture on nikon.

Yeah, shouldn't it be standard across all mounts (at the very, very least). Say, Zeiss and Voigtländer lenses have aperture control whatever the mount, innit?
I understand what you're saying, of course, but I don't need the camera or lens getting into the way of my already quite limited photography skills. Especially since I'm not getting nearly enough practice these days.
Hell. I could get them all for under the price of 1 Nikon lens. HAHA
