p.2 #1 · Canon is going mirrorless!

There was once an APS sized camera that accepted EF lenses: EOS IXE/IX. It was stainless steel and was so small the lens mount area bulged out. Much smaller than a current Rebel series. It was a nice form factor as long as the lenses weren't too large. Of course it used a pentamirror and reflex mirror but I couldn't imagine a camera being any smaller and accepting EF optics.

An IXE sized SLR or EVF that fully uses EF/EF-S optics without adapters would probably sell really well to current EOS shooters. One that uses a whole new lens system would

Ooo, I would certainly buy d-IXE

I agree that using the existing mount would be preferable but that doesn't seem to be the trend these days.

Plus, Canon really needs to come out with a few pancake primes...

The Fuji x100 was the catalyst.

If they only equip it with a decent pixel density for better reach, eh, sorry, angular resolution.

@fraga, they were working on the 70-200 mk II

Example of potential compactization of an L-lens setup (exaggerated for fun):

Pixel density can remove the teleconverters and a good AF'ing mirrorless small body like the new PENs can remove the 7D:

It looks like the tripod mount ring is backwards.

I'm not sure that it would.

If Canon comes out with a smaller camera that uses my current lenses, I won't buy it.

I don't want to haul my big lenses around. I don't want a camera big enough to use them. I already have plenty of choices for that. I can get a Rebel weighing it at about a pound. That's a two pound savings. That's not enough.

I want smaller lenses. The Canon 24/2.8 is 10 oz. That's 4x the weight of the Oympus 17/2.8.

I want bigger lenses, like a 200-500/4. That would not be good on a toy camera.

Just buy a G3 or EP-3/EPL-3 now and you'll have it at least 12 months before Canon offers anything at best.

I hope they do, but I'm not hanging around for that possibility. I'll be getting the G3 when ever they turn up in BH.

I might bite if the L lenses are compatible although it defeats the purposes of compactness. It might be difficult to buy overlapping lenses although I do have some of that now with the Panasonic GH2. I'll wait and see.

Thanks for the information, Yakim.

Canon has already patented a adapter for a EF lens to a small camera body. The stated idea being that there would not be a large selection of lenses when first introduced, so the adapter would allow a user to have more selection.

I think they let the cat out of the bag with that patent.

I'm not celebrating yet... not until Nikon or Canon come out with a mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera WITH A DECENT VIEWFINDER and not just a Sony NEX or Oly Pen clone.

But somehow I think hell might freeze over before that happens.

Just because Canon patent's something doesn't mean it will ever see the light of day.

Rumors have it that Nikon's mirrorless camera will feature a ~ 2.7x crop factor. Curious if Canon's solution will use a small sensor too.

or build a mirrorless FF that can use EF lenses

The registration distance for EF lenses is too large for these lenses to be viable on a small camera.

That's my plan. It may be a long wait to Canon, despite the interview.

I'm basically with Eric on this, except that the *option* to use EF/EFS lenses, even with an adapter, would be handy. Actually, preferably with an adapter, so that the sensor-to-flange distance can be smaller.

e.g. about 114 mm˛ of the sensor area, as compared to full-frame 35mm at 846mm˛?

That's not enticing at all, in my opinion.

I agree. It's a move to try to get people to hold off moving to other systems for the time being.

I think you meant the 200-400? It's still not available but at least they showed us a few photos a few months ago.

My concern is they'll screw it up and make the flange distance deeper than Leica M mount, thus eliminating a whole swath of existing high quality alt lenses (and I don't mean Leica only).

In any case, I can't see Canon keep it as EF mount. The lenses are way too big and would defeat the point of a compact mirrorless camera.

It wouldn't interest me either, but one needs to maintain perspective of the general photography market. I don't think this forum represents the general market, rather, a number of niche segments of the enthusiast market. That's not to say Canon won't cater to enthusiasts. I expect something more serious from Sony for its NEX offerings, so it would make sense for Canon to compete in this area as well.

Since whatever Canon will release will very likely use a different lens mount and introduce a new more compact line of lenses in order to best compete in the EVIL market, I don't feel it's imperative Canon offers something that appeals to most of my wishes for such a system. If they don't, I can find something else from another brand, since whichever I choose, I'll be buying some new lenses anyway.

Too little too late. The market has been divided already... Which is fine for me. I never like to buy too many products from the same manufacturer.

If Canon would join the 4/3s... maybe it would be a good move. I doubt it but it could be a good one.

What if canon goes FF EVIL? I would certainly be attracted.

There was a rumour a year or so ago that Canon was looking at a mirrorless with a 12x18mm sensor size, i.e. a crop factor of 2, but shaped 3/2 like 35mm rather than 4/3. This would certainly allow smaller lenses and a smaller flange distance, while keeping the EF-adapter route open (perhaps) as a transition and for a greater variety of lens options, such as fast primes, long teles, etc.
