p.3 #1 · Canon is going mirrorless!

We will launch an interesting product next year.
It could mean anything from a DP1 to x100, to GF1 to NEX5.
My guess at possible cameras:
G12 with APS-C sensor, or Canonet styled camera with interchangeable lenses and APS-H sensor .

Well here's report of a patent on a lens for a mirrorless Canon with APS-C sensor?

(In the translation they leave the word "nonrefu" as is. It is how the Japanese make abbreviations and it is the first syllables of the two words "non reflex" = non-ref" (cf. hazmat) and the F sound doesn't exist except with a u on , therefore ="Non -refu"

There are hundreds of patents & patent applications from Canon (and everyone else too) for all sorts of cameras, lenses, etc that have never seen the light of day. A patent or patent app in and of itself means absolutely nothing in terms of a real-world product...sorry to rain on your parade. However, I do have hopes of a (near future) Canon mirrorless offering.

That prompted me to look on B&H's web site, since I've had a G3 for several months. I saw that they are available with the kit 14-42 lens, but body only is on back-order.

I'll remark that I tried the Olympus 45mm f1.8 on my G3 and wasn't impressed with its general IQ; the Panasonic 45mm f2.8 stabilized macro is worlds better.

I've abandoned all hope.

I didn't have a parade to be rained on! I've seen many patents from Canon too that have not seen the light of day. (My favourite was one where the sensor is read so that different pixels have one of several different exposure times such as 1 msec, 4 msec and 16 msec based on a pre-exposure reading, but the multiple images are all centered on the same instant in time - 4 extra stops of DR with no motion blur...) It was more the discussion from the person who reported it that might have been of interest -if it had been translated a little more betterer

the article was from July of last year so maybe the camera being referred to in the article is the now released GX1.

...but maybe the GX1 is the first in a new line of cameras...the next variant maybe be the one with interchangable lenses (and possibly an adapter for EFs/EF lenses too). Just pure speculation but it does seem odd that everyone else has an interchangable lens/mirrorless body and Canon does not.

I don't get it ...

If you want a mirrorless camera then go buy one. Why does it have to be Canon?

Best laugh I've had in a long time!!! Should have a NEX on the end.

If they only equip it with a decent pixel density for better reach, eh, sorry, angular resolution.

@fraga, they were working on the 70-200 mk II

Example of potential compactization of an L-lens setup (exaggerated for fun):

Pixel density can remove the teleconverters and a good AF'ing mirrorless small body like the new PENs can remove the 7D:

Guys irl not every patent is used, there are a lot of Canon patents throughout the years that never actually materialized into an actual product.

Because keeping a duplicate system is expensive, and being able to have a MILC Canon alongside the 5D2 or whatever as a backup/small kit would be extremely useful. Far more useful to me than what I have now, which is a NEX 5N - its fantastic for legacy lenses, but the native emount lens choice is very thin.

That's why they have a 70% tax rate and love it.

It would make sense.

Just as Fuji followed the fixed-lens X100 with the interchangeable-lens X-Pro1 and a Leica-mount adapter, Canon may follow the GX1 with a mirror-less interchangeable-lens camera and an EF-mount adapter.

I don't see why this is such big news. Canon introduced a *full frame* mirrorless camera in late 2005. It was called the 5D. Just use it on a hot day to activate the mirrorless feature. ;-)

This is Canon new lens 1600mm f22 (f-22 is no problem if you live in Mercury)

Hmm... mirrorless and shooting first light or last light landscapes. Try it and you might have an opinion to share.
