p.24 #2 · Zeiss Lens Photos and Discussion

Beautiful shots everyone,

Due to the fear of 'shaving off ' the rear barrel it took a long pondering. Finally I bit the bullet and converted my old CY50/1.4 to F mount with Leitax. Conversion went sort of ok. Stupidly, I messed up one screw in unscrewing process, ended up using a drill to get rid of it. After that, all went just fine. Despite the Leitax site's warning, my particular copy did not have any issue with hitting the mirror at infinity. I am very grateful as there was not much of metal to shave off from this particular lens. New Leitax mount now has indents for f-stops for the little ball bearing to click, which is immensely better than the no-feedback from previous version. I might order an extra leitax mount to replace old mount on CY28.

Now onto 50/1.4 It is quite interesting, although I have owned this lens for so long, I only used it for relatively short period on Aria, and it was a film camera. I didn't quite feel I knew the lens at all. Lens characteristics is everything that everyone says. Strong haze wide open with high contrast scene, goes away closed down. Longer distance makes it less noticeable, and may be stronger in the situation than closeups. blah blah, we all know the story. So far, I love this lens.

One very strange thing I am experiencing with D700 is metering. Wide open, it tends to overexpose. As I close down aperture, the camera tends to underexpose for each f-stop. By f 5.6 some shots got much darker, getting toward underexposure. I am not quite sure what this means, and I need to study more. Anyway, ehough with my long winded story.

Edited for accuracy

By f 5.6 it gets rather dark. I am not quite sure what this means, and need to observe the behavior much more, however, it is strong enough that even I noticed it. For now, the best way seems to be, find the best exposure wide open( this may not be true ), and manually adjust f-stop and shutter speed.

That has been experience with alt lenses on a 40D and 5D. More or less the same with every lens, having to dial in positive EC when stopping down.
Nice shots btw.

Interesting. It may have something to do with how cameras are setup for open aperture for metering. With lenses that physically closes aperture prior to exposure, must mess up the metering.

I did a little more checking, and confirmed it was the same with CY28. It just was more dramatic with CY50.

Thanks by the way. I am loving this lens quite a bit. Kind of like a strange reunion to me.

That's what I think too. The focusing screen (where the metering takes place) probably responds to small apertures in a way that's quite different from what the sensor sees.

One workaround is to use the EMF chip which allows you to dial in the aperture, to calculate proper exposure based on wide open metering. The only downside is that you have to use AE lock for every shot (but you do get the actual aperture in the EXIF, provided that you actually physically stop down the lens to the same value ).

akul -- I guess I've been lucky, not having any funny business with exposure from the Zeiss Contax 50/1.4 and the 1Ds2. I don't get any focus shift either, unlike the disappointment I had with the ZE 50/1.4.

Nice shots you've got there -- looks like a winner.

Morfeus and Robin -- more great stuff from you two!

The Zeiss 35-70 is my favorite landscape lens. Nice NZ shots from both the 21 and Vario-Stunnar.

Aham B - Thanks for the tip. I opted for not to order one with chip. For 28, I ordered one with chip, but ended up removing it as it was interfering with the lens barrel. I feel like I can just get used to it.

fefo, Gunzorro - thank you very muc.

fefo - Lovely shots you got there. I am digging the color and bokeh very much.

robin - Those shots are simply amazing. Second one, somehow puts me right in the middle of the swirl.

Morfeus - Amazing shot. Composition is just perfect, almost a painting. ( I mean it as compliment )

Thank you so much, Philippe and Lars!

Lars, I think portraits is what I am best in. Unfortunately I do not have many opportunities to shoot them here, so most of them are shot when traveling. It's a shame that I do not have more time to travel.

Robin: Brilliant #1 in NZ on the most recent post and awesome lake shot on the previous page.
Akul: isn't it annoying the bridge is covered right now?

Morfeus, love the car shots. Your work is really pushing me to pick up the 50mm F1.7... since right now I have 0 50mm lenses!

Slightly different take on this comp.

Morfeus, your photos are killing me, they have a NG taste.

I have a Rollei Planar 50mm is it possible to use it on D700?

I can see that I will have to look for a nice 35-70/3.4. I see so many great shots with that lens!

Yes, many great shots, Carsten. But it can also be infuriatingly tricky to use. Buyer beware!
