I just returned from a photo excursion to southern Utah and northern Arizona. While I have only just started to work on my images, I thought that I would post a couple today and will post more as I work on them.
The first image was shot in an area of the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona called White Pocket. The rock formations were fascinating and beautiful. One of the things that I really appreciate is that I have not seen a lot of images from the area, so it felt really fresh. This image was shot around 4 pm in the afternoon, so the sun was getting a little lower in the sky. I came across a little pond in which the colorful rock formation that I was walking toward was reflected.
The second image was shot at Chimney Rock in Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. We attempted to light paint Chimney Rock, but the light that we were using just did not do a good job on the rock face. It obliterated details and looked splotchy. The one thing that we noticed was that as cars were driving along the road to the right of the image, their headlights would shine on Chimney Rock and the other adjacent rock features. So, I started to capture shots as the headlights lit up the rocks and it worked out pretty well. This image is a combination of three shots - one for the Milky Way, and two for the rocks.
