Great shots Joe, a very nice series with terrific colour, some great subjects and very sharp results. Paul.

Black backgrounds work for me. They help to set the subject off nicely. I have kept my SB-800 rather than the SB-900 because of its compact size.

It's a pleasure to see flash so expertly used - a photographer's skill - vs ultra-high ISO - machine skill.

My compliments. Excellent work.

Thanks Ken..... and thanks to everyone else!!!

Photography is all about capturing light and I believe that flash can be a very positive part of it.... So many are shooting natural light only (my professional brother is).. I just think those that oppose flash do not really understand it?

Cheers and thanks again.

Joe,

If by "don't understand it" you mean "don't know how to use it properly" I agree. The machine-operated metering settings (TTL & E-TTL) don't produce predictable results, or at least never did for me, so you don't give yourself a lot of positive feedback using them. Learning to do manual settings, how to bounce the light, etc is also a fairly unrewarding experience.

I'm surprised your professional brother only uses "natural light" - does that mean absolutely no shooting indoors?

Anyway, you've demonstrated that you've mastered it - good work.
