p.1 #1 · Hike to Snow Lake in WA

Went up there this morning with some width, Canon 14mm prime and 17-40mm/polarizer. Wasn't too cold really, only ran into a lot of people coming back down. Some snow, great colors and well the lake as usual is amazing...

p.1 #3 · Hike to Snow Lake in WA

Nice set. I really struggled to pick a favorite between the first 3. I think I like the composition of 1, and the exposure of 3. I think if you did a little work on 1 maybe you could open up the dark areas just a touch, then that would really do it for me. But 4 is my favorite of them all. For such a seriously wide shot, it looks very natural, with great exposure, nice framing, and killer DOF of course. Wondering what the aperture was on 4, just out of curiousity?

Thanks for sharing,

ML

thanks ML...yes the 14mm f/2.8 really does a nice job with the width.

Stats on #4: Canon EOS 5D | Date: 11/1/09 1:10 PM | ISO: 100 | Exp. Time: 1/250s | Aperture: 8.0 | Focal Length: 14.0mm

btw I had bumped up the dark areas in the first two a bit using Gradient in LR but maybe a nudge more I guess...

Excellent, only problem now is if I end up deciding to buy a 5D MkII, now I also have to budget in a 14mm

I dunno - the tweaking you would need to do to lighten is so subtle it might not even be worth it. In truth, I just changed monitors here too, so that might be part of the problem...

Good stuff, thanks for the EXIF.

true...I still think about the 5D mk2, but ended up finding an unreal bargain on the 14mm mk2 on craigslist across the country and pounced on that instead

Nice. I like #3 the best. I hiked up there and camped and fished with my dad 36 years ago. Not a lot of people back then.

Mike,

As you no doubt have heard as well, they always say spend your money on glass instead of a camera body.

I think what you have created with your new 14mm lens proves the point

One of my favorite hikes, but have never seen the lake and snow and blue skies at the same time.

A beautiful series!

Thanks everyone...

Tim yes its an amazing hike...leaves from the Alpental parking lot off I90. Busy trail in the summer but not too bad this time of year. We overdressed a bit, and layers eventually came off. Saw one guy in flip flops though

Very cool, Mike. I think 3 is my favorite. They all are very good, but 2 and maybe 1 are just a tad too dark in certain places, IMHO.
