It is partof the standard developement to maturity of modern digital equipment.
I think people have a hard time understanding that modern digi SLR's are "very sophisticated" pieces of digital gear and no amount of pre release testing will cover every possible combination of circumstance..ever.
I mean i fly a 100Million USD aircraft that has been in service for 20 years and its still got problems.
People need to get used to the fact that forking out 5Grand does not nor will ever buy you a bullet proof perfet piece of gear.
Get used to it..

I wonder how many people will pre-order the MKIV. I guess most of sportshooters are waiting for the real results instead of pre-order that camera. They are not interested in new firmware updates, submurror fixes ect...
Canon has not fixed the problem with the 1DMKIII yet.

I've got my order for two in and my mkII bodies are going up for sale. After getting burned on the mkIII and seeing and trying out a mkIV tester, Canon will ensure the mkIV is going to be about as perfect as a 1-series can get out of the gate.

Agreed. I'm not too fussed about having firmware updates in the first few months. I trust that Canon would not release this camera with such a major f*ck up like the last one, so it should be smooth sailing.

I am quite certain that if you asked Canon users prior to the 1D-III release if they trusted Canon not to release a camera with a bad AF, they would have said yes. Will the 1D-IV have a defective AF? Almost certainly not, but there are so many other things that can go wrong, who can really say they must have the 1D-IV so badly that they will take the risk.

Those that have pre-ordered a 1D-IV are clearly in the position of being able to accept the risk of getting a camera with a problem. That risk always exists with a new camera, regardless of the manufacturer, but with Canon's recent history the risk appears to be higher. I would bet that fewer pros than normal will be early adopters of the 1D-IV. That is just the nature of the market. Canon must realize this and that is why I fully expect a special customer loyalty program to be announced for the 1D-IV.

Me too - I'm jumping straight from MkII to MkIV & I was on the waiting list at my dealer this time last year. Delivery date still wooly - all they can confirm is December.

I generally accept your logic here except there is another way to look at it; some pros want to get a head start with new camera bodies. That way we can work out any kinks/warranty issues, and be way ahead of the game vs our photographic competition when they eventually migrate later on. Getting better images faster to the client (i.e. Getty, AP, Corbis, ad agencies, etc.) can mean eating better than the next guy. Early adopters are not just taking risks; they are staying ahead of the curve so to speak.

You are correct. I don't rely on my 50D to generate revenue (although I easily could with complete confidence). But, the ERR 99 happened only once, very briefly. I took the battery out and put it back in and it functioned perfectly thereafter. The firmware fix just added more peace of mind.

I saw the release just before midnight central time, and I placed my Amazon.com order early the next morning. I suspect I'm still pretty high on the list. I checked Amazon when I saw the release, but they hadn't posted the camera yet. I went to bed. I thought I'd sleep on it, but I woke up still wanting it. Merry Christmas to me.

I noticed Canon made the announcement around 12:05 AM EST. I immediately looked at Amazon and saw the 1D Mark IV listed. But, initially, there was only a button to press if you wanted Amazon to e-mail you when it was available to order. I went off for a few minutes to the various forum; then came back and refreshed the Amazon page and voila! The pre-order button was there. I thought briefly about co-ordering a spare battery and CF cards, but I wasn't sure at the time which battery it took (turned out to be the same one as the 1D Mark III). So, I just pre-ordered body only at 12:30 AM. I figured I had 2 months to decide on the spares and accessories. I contacted Kirk Enterprises about an L-bracket. They said usually they will have it out 2 weeks after the camera ships. I'm also considering some fast mode 6 CF cards (16 GB Lexar Professional 600x or 32 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro). My desktop PC doesn't have an ExpressCard slot. Lexar's reader looks great if you have an ExpressCard slot.

Canon has not fixed the problem with the 1DMKIII yet.

The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV is now ranked 22 on Amazon's DSLR bestseller's list (pre-order, of course). It has been in the top 100 for 12 days. Pretty amazing, even for a new body, at $4999.99.

Nikon's D3s is ranked 34 (right now in this admittedly snapshot in time). Also amazing for a $5199.95 body.

The 1D Mark IV only weighs 5.7 oz. more (or 0.36 lbs more) than a 50D with a grip.

You wanna talk about significant weight, just compare the larger lenses that would be necessary for a low-rez FF to lenses with the same framing on a 1.3x crop. A 400 f/2.8 weighs 6.2 lbs more than a 300 f/2.8 (each with about the same framing FF vs. 1.3x respectively).
