I'm surprised that Tamron hasn't released a 28-75 f/2.8 VR and beat Canon to the punch. The 28-75 has a great reputation; add VR at a reasonable price and Canon would have some real competition.

The Tamron 28-75 is a great lens for the money. I had one with a 40D and now 5D. But it does get some vignetting on the wide end on a full frame. Plus you cannot use the lens hood because it gets into the frame at 28mm. But I still use the tamron quite a bit.

I'd like to throw into the mix the 24-85 3.5-4.5 USM if you haven't been recommended this in previous posts. It is a great range on the 5D and will not "crush" your budget either. It's relatively fast at the wide end, and not bad at the long end either.

I shoot with the 24-105L f/4.0 and have the wide angle of the 24-85, and the long end I have the luxury of 105. I like the 24 wide angle on this more than the 28-105, and really, I don't think I'd miss the miss the reach on the long end, and I have the 80-200 f/2.8 for longer shots, too.

If you go with a 28-105, make sure it's an f/3.5-4.5 USM version and not the lower-quality f/4-5.6 non-USM version. The f/3.5-4.5 USM is a nice, small, lightweight lens and is fairly inexpensive. I just sold mine today solely because I got the 28-135 IS with my 7D. Not much different in IQ, but I don't mind having the IS and the extra 20 mm.

I also have the 24-70L which stays on my 5D2 most of the time. It is a great lens for full frame, although there are times when I would prefer the 24-105L IS instead. Shooting events, sometimes 70 mm isn't quite long enough.

I think 24-70L or 24-105L are all good for 5D camera, you can review the photos took by the 2 sets.

Again with the sweeping generalisations.

Most 24-70L lenses are more or less perfect. Mine is the best zoom lens I've owned. My colleagues have similar views. As with most lenses, a few have calibration and other issues, yet for you it's major panic.

There are thousands of perfect, working 24-70L's out there with owners who don't post here.
