Hello to all,

I will be looking for a standard zoom lens to go with my 5D (and also my 1Ds). Which one would fit the best for general photography?

the 24-70L is what I use as my general lens for my 5D. I like it a lot.
A lot of my friends use the 24-105L and they like that a lot.
They both have pros and cons but i'm sure you already know that.

"Standard Zoom" as in 'standard focal length?...Then your choices are pretty simple, either the Canon 24-105/4IS or the 24-70/2.8. Of course some people consider 'standard' to be either wider (like the 17-40) or longer (like the 70-200).

The 24-70L, 24-105L, 28-105 and the 28-135 IS come to mind.
I have the 24-70L and the 28-105 and that little 28-105 on the 5D as a walkaround is not bad.
The 24-105L would probally be my first choise as a general zoom lens.

I dunno. I use my 50L 80% of the time and the 16-35II the rest. My 24-105 is good outside when it's bright but I'm just not grabbing it.

24-105LIS for general/walk around.

24-70 (28-70) for any situation requiring f/2.8.

I have both, but the 24-105LIS sees more action because it is lighter and a bit smaller.

I like my 24-105 but in the light of a Canadian autumn, it can't hack it. I'm sure the Brits being way further north would have even more issues with F4.

Way further north than where most of the population is. Goose Bay in Labrador (as in the frozen north) is about the same latitude as Liverpool.
Where I am in southern Ontario is about the same latitude as southern Portugal-Spain.
Easy stuff, you just have to look at an atlas. Not really news, just geography.

No, we do not.

Where are live (South Western Ontario), it can definitely get hotter and more humid in Summer than in Portugal (and of course, colder in Winter).

I traded my 24-105 for a 24-70. There hasn't been one instance that I regretted it. With that said, the 24-105 is a stellar lens.

If you're really cheap? Get an old Canon EF 28-80 II lens that came with the Rebel series. May have been called KISS in Europe?
A little more money to spend? 28-105 non-IS lens. Small, yet nice quality.
Even more money to spend? 28-135 IS lens. Nice quality and you get IS.
Burning a hole in your pocket? 24-105 L lens. Stealth L lens. It's a black body.
Rich relative left you everything? 24-70 ƒ/2.8 lens. Shoot wide open and tell everyone it's SUPPOSED to be out of focus.
