It's not like the lens expires after a certain length of time. If it is in even just good condition it will still last a long time. It doesn't of they're cared for. I wouldn't worry about buying something older (although all EF-s lenses are relatively new). If it works and looks good then that's an indication that it has been well cared for. These Canon lenses, especially the more expensive ones, don't wear out easily. A fully functional lens, that's in good shape, I wouldn't think twice about buying even if it was 15 - 20 years old. As a matter of fact, once I get my main couple of lenses for my Nikon D300 I'm going to be looking to buy a couple of 20-25 year old Nikkor primes for it. Why? Great glass cheap.
