p.7 #1 · 19 August-watch the Canon statements!!!!

I must say I don't mind cameras or PC to go mainstream though, it speeds up technological breakthrough. I don't mind not having to type commands in DOS just as I don't mind not having to spend so much money on film rolls.

I love how bent out of shape everyone gets over these announcements.

Were all of you infants in the film days? Try FIVE YEARS between new pro body updates. Nikon released the F4 in 1989 and did not release the F5 until 1996 (which I personally think is still the best camera ever made). They barely put new amateur cameras out every year.

Film and digital. Apples and banana slugs... Not the same.

There were 10 years between Canon's F-1 and the F-1n, just as they promised. The 1VHS, my personal favorite camera and the best 35mm camera ever made even compared to the F5, had at least 5 years between it and it's predecessor, and followed the EOS 3 that introduced Canon's 45-pt AF by 2+ years. Just not the same.

Again, none of this matters.cameras are "light tight" boxes with computers/electronics in them. If Canon waited 5 years for a new pro body, Nikon will have its way with them for the next decade...

How well does your 5 year old PC work? it may be fine for word processing and email, but processing 20+ MP images with layers, or perhaps a "photomerge/pano"? not so good......

Canon really can't do right by some people... I've seen so many posts about how 15MP is too much for a P&S small sensor and here they are reducing the MP and still some people bitch about it. Damn...

You misunderstand my comment. Frankly I couldn't care how much MP it has since I never planned on buying one and 15 vs 10 MP makes no difference to me. I'm making a comment on how instead of innovation and improvement, we get a backwards step and it's lauded as "the right thing to do"

What's with the bitching about people's opinions?

I guess Dawai was saying that doing something wrong and then correcting it is not the same as innovation. So, Canon doesn't really deserve any kudos for first messing up the megapixel angle, and then correcting it. They were just coming back to their senses.

In any case, why argue about it between ourselves? Canon will eventually announce the 60D, and then we can really argue.

ooohhh goody. Will it have 32MP or 10MP? I'm sure either way Canon will lose.

if it's 10MP, then all the 40d owners will be vindicated in their statements that the 50d is not an upgrade. if it's 32MP (pick any/some ridiculous number) then the marketing department is firmly in charge and IQ is somewhere down on the wish list instead of being #1, where it belongs...

How's reducing MP a backward step? Before we have 4416 x 3312 and now we have 3648 x 2736, Oh no... we lose around 800 x 600 pixel... Now Canon has to admit "ok we fail, let's just ease back our goals".

I realise that opinions are like anus, everybody's got one. The problem is now that we got net forums, we get the equivalent of "farting in an elevator" all the time.

Ok, so where are all the confident prophets who so adamantly insisted that there would be "big announcements" on August 19th?!

"Things sure were simpler back in the days right gramps?

This is what happens when something goes mainstream. It happened with PC hardwares/softwares and now it's happening with cameras."

I have to agree and disagree. Things have changed little in the pro shooting world since the late 90s, other than everything works faster. We were already scanning negs and transmitting. What digital really has done for us is make it possible to send right after games and news events, and allowed us to know whether we've got "the shot" in the bag right away.

But a camera is just a tool, and while everyone was complaining on and on about the Nikon D2h, I was out making pictures with it and winning awards. Same with the Kodak NC2000, which was the first pro digital system for photojournalists.

The point is photographers need to focus on making great pictures, not on the incremental improvements of the next camera. Relax, Canon will trump Nikon again some day, just as it did when EOS came out and again when the 1D came out.

Actually my old PowerBook 12" is still in the press room, processing and sending away. It all depends on what you invest in. BTW, the staff photographer for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is still shooting with his "ancient" MK II's and making great pictures. I think he still carries a 20D for a grab camera to some games. It doesn't stop him from printing 20x30's or 30x40's from every game.

FWIW the 19th isn't over yet...there may still be another announcement scheduled for later in the day. If not, look forward to next month. Until then why not pick up your camera and go take some pictures? I think a lot of you guys would be amazed that it still works

Don't forget about the new Pixma printers... like a repeat of when it happened before, people were expecting a big announcent that turned out to be some consumer line of printers. Seeing them pulling back from the megapixel wars is also a refreshing thing, I was expecting the G11 to be 16+ MP, definately not 10.

A little while ago I started a post with no editorial comment other than perhaps somewhat inflammatory title called "And there sat Canon with a thumb up it's A**" which in its entirety said "Without further editorial comment..... Check out the news sites, Nikon has gone and done it again. They have announced another version of our mythical 3D. "

As some may recall, I was taken to task and told repeatedly to just wait to see what Canon came up in August. Well I waited and I admit that I am thrilled to death to see a talking printer. Preeeety cool and just exactly what the world needs is another female voice (real or otherwise) telling us when we screwed something up.

Now I know someone will think that I hate Canon and say something stupid like "go buy a Nikon if you don't like Canon" but that isn't and never was the point. Personally, I am disappointed and I don't feel that I have to be happy that they gave us a talking printer rather than something that would have been of value to myself and other serious photographers such as an improved flash system, better AF or updated lenses.

On the G11, even though the improvements come from fixing past mistakes rather than innovation I would give them points for both fixing those mistakes and being willing to buck the trend toward ridiculous MP counts solely for the purpose of being able to claim that theirs is bigger than everyone else's.

I agree Henry, I actually think that Canon is to be commended for taking a very bold step in reducing the number of MP in a given line, and can only hope that it stops the madness in P&S pixel density (and perhaps in entry-level DSLRs, as well).

Agreed! It's gonna be cool seeing consumers take a step back and wonder whether MP really is the end-all-be-all measurement of how good a camera is. It's kinda similar to when people started paying so much attention to ultimate CPU speed in computers and began looking at other aspects of the computer.

It's also interesting to hear so many people whine and complain about improvements and updates. This video hits the nail on the head on that issue:

Plenty of people here on FM were predicting the Mark IV on this date, I think that's big. I don't really care but it's slightly annoying to have people make definitive pronouncements ahead of time about what will be released when as if they are in the know - only to have them vanish when it turns out to be a P&S.

Surprisingly insightful. I tend to agree that we are unappreciative of what we really have.

The rumor is that the next date for a Canon announcement is September 1st/2nd. I'm hoping for an advanced xxD, but it also could be the elusive 7D (FF).

Before that, Sony will make an announcement on August 24 for what looks like another FF (Alpha 850) and chances are it will include the Exmor R sensor.

Let's suppose both events will happen If 7D fails to impress, the glory will go to Sony. Canon will lose again the spotlight.

Or not...
