Hi guys
i am going away for france at late august, and i'm thinking is this a good time to get a 5D mark ii
for the trip?? or should i stay at what i have right now...?
I have a 40D, 24-105L, 70-200mm 2.8IS and 300L 4.0IS
i'd love to have a wide angle lens for the landscape, but 24mm is simply not wide enough on a cropped sensor

my thought so far, is to sell my 40d and 300L to raise fund for the new full frame
so that i get the true 35mm coverage and the better image quality
what would you do? please give me suggestion....

any advice is much appreciated

I bought a 5D Mk2 this spring to go with my 40D and have never regretted it. The 17-40L is a perfect match as a wide-angle which it never was on the 40D

question is how much do you want a new body over keeping the 300/4?
Also is your current computer setup good enough to cope with the files + also does you software support the 5d2 or will you have to upgrade that as well?

If its just the quest for a wide then why not look towards an UWA for your cropper now.n I just got a 40D and 24-105 as my main lens + also the tokina 12-24 and just having come back from France those 2 made a good combo on the 40D

All that said if I had the chance then I think I would jump at the 5d2 as well

A couple of options which will give ya extra width without the expense of megasensor 5D MkII:
(1) Replace 40D with 5D Mk I, or...
(2) Buy EF-S 10-22mm.....now you are talking real wide.

sell the 24-150 and get a 17-55 IS (or tamron 17-50 if you can live without IS)

or go for the 5D2, I think you'd want more than 24mm on APS-C for France

The best bang for your buck would be to add an EF-S 10-22 to use with your 40D.

5D MK II and the 24-105 will make a great travel kit. I would add a fast prime and if you want wider, get the 17-40 L.

I would hold on to the 40D if at all possible. It's nice to have a backup, and the 40D is a great camera.

Then, one question becomes: How much do you use the 300/4? If you haven't used the lens in several months, and you don't plan on using it in the near future (e.g., you can articulate a need for the lens), then you likely won't miss it too much. I recently sold several lenses that I rarely used and I haven't missed them yet, but I knew that I wouldn't miss something I didn't use very often!

I upgraded from a 40D to a 5D MkII by selling a 300 f:4 IS... and a 100mm f:2.8. And never looked back, even though 40D was a camera I really liked. Better LCD, micro-adjust, high-ISO, full format, much better viewfinder, you have a lot of goodies waiting for you.
You will be fine with your 2 lenses. If you have to have an ultra-wide, 17-40 will help, but your 5D would already give you a much wider use of 24-105 than what you have today. Have fun!

Tokina 12-24, Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-22 f/3.5 if you need much wider. But I'd also take a fast prime like a 50 f/1.4.

a 10-22 will solve all your problems. Think of it this way:

If you have to sell your 300 to buy a 5d, you'll increase your options on the wide and loose options on the long end.

Buy the 10-22, and you'll increase your options on the wide end, and still have all your options on the long end

ADDENDUM: Pick up a used 10-22 on FM, and it's one of those lenses that you won't loose anything on when you go to sell it. It's truly a special lens. Stellar IQ, contrast, sharpness, flare resistance. If I could have only ONE lens with me to tour europe, that would be the one. A great match for the 24-105. On a crop camera, it's roughly equivalent in FL to the 17-40 on the 5D.

Just add the 10-22, increase your options, and save the money. With some of what you save, maybe add the 50 1.8 for 85 bucks, and you've got a great 3 lens package for France.

You might want to consider a Tokina 12-24 for the 40D (a combination I know well). Cheap, sharp and very well built.

you can always sell your 300mm if you aren't using it, and just save the extra money.

First I thought the answer depends more on what are you going to shoot then where, but I can't see any area where the 40D would be better (unless this is a birding trip).

- 5D2 has better resolution for landscapes
- 5D2 has probably better high iso performance for night life
- 5D2, even though the body itself is heavier than 40D, makes relatively lightweight and useful combo with 50mm lens for long strolls in Paris or elsewhere.

If you absolutely need FF, then the choice is obvious.

However, the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is a fantastic lens that will give you wide coverage as well as a decent zoom range. Yeah, the 10-22 is crazy wide, but I haven't seen too many 10mm shots that I really liked. Way too much distortion for my tastes. I've used my brother's 40D + 17-55 and REALLY liked that combo. The 40D really is a great camera. But it's not FF...

Have you thought about renting? You could rent an EF-S 17-55 as well as the 5D2 (with your 70-200 lens (which is just amazing on the 5D2), and have an awesome zoom range without having to change lenses. However, that's a lot of gear. If you're trying to keep the amount of gear to a minimum, I'd suggest buying or renting the 17-55 for your 40D and bringing the 70-200.
