p.1 #1 · Samyang 85mm f/1.4--Why?

I see, offered on eBay, copies of a lens unknown to me, and for which a quick Google search brings up nothing useful: Samyang 85mm f/1.4, offered for $734 in a Nikon mount.

Since the Nikkor is not much more expensive, and the Zeiss a step, but not a great leap, up in cost, why anyone would consider this Samyang? Does anyone know something I don't? Any objective tests? Seems weird.

not exactly the kind of company I would trust...
That lens maybe does not even exist.
They are making the 500mm f8 cheap mirror lens that we sometimes see appear on the net under different names...

It's probably a knockoff of another lens. But I would not even consider such a brand at that price. I remember that Samyang lenses have been around for a long time, though.

The eBay listing states "Focus type: Manual". I can't find auto focus mentioned anywhere in the ad so have to assume that's correct.

As far as I know, Samyang has never made an auto-focus lens. A couple AF lenses sold under their name were made by others, probably Cosina. This is a manual focus lens.

I have no idea why they decided to make this particular lens. It's completely out of their league. These guys are best known for making bottom of the barrel lenses, like the weird 650mm f/11 type lenses (pipes with glass) sold on ebay for $200.

Now I get it--hadn't noticed that "free gift" until Steve pointed it out. I've been mostly a Nikkor user, but since the Samyang comes with a free microfiber cloth, I'll probably change.

I also note that the listing says it is a "genuine" Samyang. Thank goodness! Wouldn't want one of those cheap knock-offs of the Samyang.

Seriously, for all I know, it might actually be a decent lens, but at that price, I don't imagine too many people are going to find out.

Oy vey, Chris. Such an honor we are about to bestow upon you. You have been chosen "Reviewer of the Week." In recognition of this great honor, you will be allowed to purchase this lens (at your own expense--you think we're rich or something?) and report back to us about this lens. This could very well be the discovery of a lifetime, and you get to report back to all of us on how this lens performs. Congratulations!

The block diagrams for the Samyang and the 85/1.4 AF Nikkor look damn near identical except for the last couple elements. In the Samyang, they are one group with one of the elements being aspherical, and in the Nikon, the last two elements are separate groups with neither being aspherical. I'd bet if you posted about this in the Alternative forum, someone would buy one and test it out. Here is a page that has the block diagram from the Nikon, and here is the one from the Samyang [PDF] I personally think that this could have the potential to be a very interesting lens. I only wish I had the money right now. People originally put off Vivitar when they came out with the Series 1 lenses; some of which later proved to be the best in their class, third party or OEM.

I'd buy that lens if it was $100 and if it sucked I'd use it to prop up my kitchen table. For $700 I wouldn't buy it with someone else's money...

Dirb9's block diagrams were interesting, and as far as can be seen in such a graphic, there are strong similarities between the Nikkor and the Samyang. That said, some important things are not expressed in such a diagram--refraction properties of materials used for each element, precision achieved in grinding each element, coatings placed on the elements, and alignment/collation/ quality-control issues.

I think it within the realm of possibility that the Samyang may turn out to be a superior product. Maybe Samyang is creating some cheap eBay sales channels in advance of public scrutiny of the lens, so that if people are intrigued by tests, they have somewhere to go and buy.

That said, until some of the respected reviewers go over this lens in convincing ways, and unless they rave about it, it's off of my list. Would love to be overwhelmed with quality data to convince me other othwerwise. These data may someday exist, but seem to be absent now. So at the moment, it's Nikkor or Zeiss for me. If the Samyang were dirt cheap, I'd be temped to give it a shot.

Looks like Samyang might be trying to pull a Cosina, ie moving upscale based on a set of higher-end MF primes like Cosina has done with the Voigtlander's.

Actually I really welcome this. We cannot get enough lenses, and as an alt user, I am willing to check it out. However, not at that price. They need to drop it to 300 USD and build a reputation with this and maybe a couple of other lenses before charging used c/y zeiss prices.

Agreed. If they can pull off a Cosina move, I say that's good for all of us.

They are making it in EOS mount as well, for anyone who cares and doesn't know already.

It is, however, a rather interesting place to put the aspherical element. Consider these diagrams, for instance.

I know these are f1.2s and are completely different designs with respect to elements/groups, but I have to wonder why Samyang decided to put the Aspherical element here (pink):

I can only imagine that it is cheaper to do so, since the element is relatively small.

Honestly? I have no idea. But I can guess why they might have done this.

It's almost as if they had to put this aspherical element deep into the lens in an attempt to counteract aberrations caused by the first 7 elements.

The Nikkor 85/1.4 formula is very nearly the same, but without the aspherical, so I can only assume that they are using much better glass throughout the Nikkor.

Why would you even consider this People rave about the iq from the nikkor and its probably going to be redone soon anyway....

I see no reason to buy an off brand mf lens of untested iq over a known quality piece of glass that you know yoiu could get your money out of in about 10 minutes on the buy and sell forum.....

seems a no brainer decision to me
