Of the 4 years I lived in the city 2 of them were spent in BK heights. It is a very safe area and I'd even go as far to say that it felt safer than when I lived on the upper west side of Manhattan, and the upper west side is very safe.
Brooklyn Heights is a very well to do area where you will have no issues. Generally, Manhattan below 96th St and Brooklyn Heights are totally fine, but like any big city, you have to keep your wits about you. There are millions of people here and not all of them want to wish you well.
With all the global warming and stuff, does it still snow in NYC? I mean like proper thick white snow blanketing the city, not just some grey muck with a hint of ice on the ground.

The theory of global warming, is that the winters will actually get colder, with the glaciers releasing fresh water, and messing up the balance of the salt vs. fresh water, and then temperatures on land, get colder.
:P
I'm assuming that it's worse in NY than it is in PA being further North and all...and our Winters suck.
any of you got a good 50mm. looking at all 4 of them and the 1.2L seems best of bunch. think that may be best option. its small and will be good for general shooting.
will give me effective focal range of 65mm. Bloody expensive though
am now looking at possibly just getting the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. lots of good reviews and wont need to take any other lenses. not sure how good it is as a landscape lens for those new york views at sunrise though.
85 is meant to be a very good lens but there will still be a gap in my focal range. 35-80mm and ive got the 70-200 which already covers that focal range.
I use the 17-40L on the 1D fairly often in NYC and also the 35L.
Your 16-35L will be fine.
BTW - 1DIII is fantastic, I purchased mine in August from Calumet.
cant wait to get my 1d3 psychic1,
toyed with waiting for the 5d2 but i think the 1d3 from what everyone says is going to give me a really big step up from my 20d.
may need to post some more reviews on here once i get it. "how do I........ "
This is a joke right? You think global warming is effecting NYC snow fall levels

I purchased the 24-70L with the 1DIII and it is on the camera most of the time, but, I haven't been in the city in a while.
I will be attending the Canon Flash Class on Dec 5 then running uptown to shoot the tree.
The 24-70L would be my first choice.
Enjoy.
BTW-32Gig Transcend CF and 16 Gig Transcend SD record over 2400 shots.

The steam pipes running under the city streets do not give the snow much of a life, unless go to Queens, where they plow the snow over your car.

Because I don't find it a great combo on crowded city streets. I have one and I love it, I just never bring it to NYC.
I agree... not so good for crowded streets but good for a lot of other situations... It is one heavy cumbersome sucker but I love the shots out of it...
a few from a trip to Chicago I just got back from:

While there is a gap in your FR, it all depends on what you shoot most. IMO, while it is a big gap it is not as large as it seems. FWIW I'd take my 16-35 and my 85 without reservation--although I may have a different shooting style than you. As for the whole 70-200 debate, I don't think anyone is arguing that it is a bad lens rather its not the most stealthy lens, specifically for shooting people (not to mention the extra weight). Now if you don't mind people staring at you or lugging around the extra lb's then by all means take it along--its a great lens never the less.
