Thanks for taking a look, I would love to hear what you have to say - volleyball is still hard to shoot no matter how many times i shoot it
Dann, #1 is pretty damn fan-freaking-tastic with the action and facial expression. I hope the paper ran that one. WB looks good, good lighting, good framing (on #1)... I really like #1!
#2 is not as good as #1, but a solid shot.
#3... well, crowd shots are important for the school newspaper, but personally, I've never been a big fan of. Not a bad shot, but that horizontal line on the bottom blocking out lots of faces is a big killer of this shot.
And apparently the guy in the black hoodie didn't get the e-mail/text/twitter about wearing a yellow tee to the game!
I don't mind the ref in #1 at all - he's focused on the action leading your eye to the action. If you burned down his shirt a bit (not hand of god, maybe 1/2 a stop) he would be a little less distracting.
I like shooting VB from the balcony as well - gives an additional sense of height, you don't have to fight the net messing with your AF as much, and it definitely helps to clean up your backgrounds.
Dann,
Here are my observations.
1. Lots of hot spots. Maybe increase the shutter to 640 or 750? Did you try that but went with 500? Composition is fine, but nothing compelling here. From this angle and height, it's a standard shot. This is a dime-a-dozen type of shot. As for the line judge in the background, he is unavoidable since he doesn't move from his position. To counter, move more to the left to shoot the outside hitter attacking. But pick your poison. If you move to the left, that leaves the middle and right side hitters with cluttered BGs when they are on the attack. You did manage to capture the following, however. This OH is hitting down the line. Typically, the OH's are attacking the middle and weak side. Major faux pas with your caption. There is no such thing as "utility" in volleyball. Megan Wilson is an OH (outside hitter). Also, replace "game" with "match".
2. Again, am curious to see this with a faster shutter. The ball cut off was already mentioned, and that's a major killer for this shot. "Sophmore" is misspelled.
3. More problems with the caption. Did this match take place on Thursday or Wednesday (see #1 and #2). Was the final score 4-1 or 3-1? The photo is average. Fan photos are better served shot at much closer range.
