First model shoot for me, first photo shoot for the model. We had no clear intentions/directions for the shoot except for both of us to get one under our belts.

Overall the clothes are not helping this model...make her look wide when I know she isn't!!! She is a beautiful model and for her & your first time very nice attempt. Work together again and I think images will be much better

1) not crazy about the pose - don't like the left hand that close to the face for no real reason - some will say that the head should be turned slightly toward the camera so can see whole left eye -whites are blown on her right side
2) skin colour doesn't look the same on her face - looks soft
3) like this image if it was a h&s - love her look - her feet are not positioned well - have any of her with feet on bench - very nice lighting
4) pose is ok - whites blown slightly - hotspots in bg are distracting - not sure about stick coming out of her neck

A hint for working with new models is find out the clothes she is going/wanting to wear & then look for poses that will work with the loction & the clothes and bring those poses with you. You can simply than show her the pose you want to "start" with & than work from there. It makes life easier on the model & the photographer.

Hi,

First times are always a challenge.

My Simple Suggestion: Always have a clear idea of what you want to make/intentions/directions for ANY shoot with ANY model.

I think this is especially important when working with "models" who have never "modeled" before.

Does that limit your creativity, spontaneity, or quality? I don't think so. I think it will help you be more productive, more "professional," and more attentive to the "intent" of the images and how successful you are in reaching your (or her) goal.

I hope this helps you in the future.

Pose 1= Now that you've done it, LOOK at it. Examine it. Full front shot with broad light doesn't do her any good. You can see that looking off to the horizon doesn't do anything for her face. (I'd love to work with that face!) Okay, these are trials, but if I don't criticize as if for real it doesn't mean anything, so understand the intent.

Ask her to move around, thinking flirty, or haughty, or something she likes. It's what a professional does all the time, showing the photog various poses by freezing every few moments in a new pose. When you see what you like, holler. There have been several posts here about posing suggestion cards. I put one up myself, some time ago.

Pose 2=If it was for a driver's license, and straight up, it would be perfect. A perfect blank. I'm sure you can see that, after the shoot. But try to learn to recognize it before hitting the trigger. Sometimes tilting is great, but it doesn't help a poor shot. I notice she does swivel her head a tiny bit, but she never tilts it, which can change both pose and expression. She looks concerned about what you are doing. If no internal thought, no expression on face. (Old chinesse saying )

Pose 3=Can't you hear her saying "Is this what you want?" The pose doesn't look as if she is proud of herself. Every good looking model should have that in her pose. Remember, I know these are trials.
Also, hands should be closed, and never resting on the palm, only the finger tips. Models learn not to put their weight on the supporting arm, except lightly. It bulges the shoulder. She is straight front with her body, again, and it doesn't show her off.

I usually ask the model to
1.Lick her lips.
2. Take a deep breath and arch.
3.Turn on her headlights. Most of them get it and a nice smile results. Now that's posing, not just waiting for the shutter to go off.

Pose 4=If her hips were turned more to her right and she swung her shoulders back toward the camera somewhat, her chest would be more prominent and in profile, making the most of what she has. The pose automatically looks like she is proud of her body and showing it off.
The hand on her neck should never be so far back that her fingers disappear. Looks amputated. Her left elbow should be swung back closer to her body in a more compact pose. And finally, shift your position so you don't include the tree trunks, which require viewer's unnecesary identification and attention.
This is meant for you to help the model, in addition to yourself.
Hope it did.

A lot to take in but very helpful. I do appreciate the time you you took to write this very well written and thoughtful CC.

Hmm, a lot of people telling you a lot of things. Hmm, it's NOT so simple that one could just TELL you how to do it, or else we'd have sooooo many good shots on this forum, but we don't. Although it was your first try you've done much better than many of those who want to teach others what is right or wrong. The best one can do to improve is to find themselves, research looking at good mags etc. Find the style you like and stick to it!! And remember, you'll never think your work is good enough (that's what makes us always be better)
