Can someone confirm whether the old 5D had cross-type for all points? I thought that the old 5D only had cross-type for the center AF.

Just went over the 5D white paper and Canon's web site. AF are absolutely identical between 5D and MkII, with 9 AF points (not cross type except center one). Only difference is DigicIV vs DigicII.

Such a shame Canon ...

What about stop nagging at those that have different wants and needs than you do? If you want a slow, high res, great IQ camera, with no other bells and whistles, that is great. Some of us DO want things like better weather sealing and maybe a more updated AF, that doesen't make us stupid or anything else you might want to imply, it just means that we have different wants and needs. Implementing better weathersealing would not cost canon more than $10 in R&D and $5 pr camera in production cost, this is a "let us be careful not to step too much on the 1ds mark III's toes" decision, and it might prove to be a sound business decision, OR it might prove to be unwise, we don't know yet, but "move on" and acting condecending is not solving much.

Thank you.

Well, the new 5D Mark II must be a failure as there are no new 5d listings on the buy and sell forum since the announcement. I guess everyone is keeping their old 5D and waiting for the 5D Mark IIn

Well go to Iguazu falls and try to take a picture there...
What's annoying is that it's a marketing decision as always.
D700 wasn't enough to change Canon's approach - milk as long as you can,
who cares what the customers want....

is that equivalent to dunking the 1dsIII into sea water and see what happens? seriously..just move on.

move on...either buy it or don't. either way this thread is not going to start a national boycott or anything. its not meant to be condecending...
its just like cars...toyota..lexus...if you don't liek features in toyota..buy a lexus. just stop hating that lexus has it and toyota doesn't.

Seems as though the video doesn't provide audio and while I don't see any specs on the video aside from 1920x1080 it apears to be interlaced and not progressive.

I can understand the disappointment of some folks. For me, this is the perfect camera. 3.9 is more than enough, the AF system is fine (I have a 5D mkI and I've never had a problem with it), and I rarely, if ever, shoot in bad weather. However, I absolutely love the IQ of my 5D now, and I think it's pretty clear that the 5DII is going to be a significant step up - if the 50D is any indication. And the video mode is just awesome. As an expecting father who was planning on buying a video camera, I can say that I really appreciate this feature.

From RG:

The 5D Mark II's sensor also features the same light-gathering area within each pixel (called the fill ratio) and same microlens coverage over each pixel as the company's current flagship.

no gapless sensor?

RG is just wrong on several counts... such as the viewfinder, etc.

Recommend reading the actual Canon information posted.

Total junk camera - overdue, over priced, under spec and no pop-up flash. Why Canon couldn't have made it a 10fps, weather sealed, 30point AF and 39mp for $1500 is a total mystery. I'll probably have to buy one - I guess I could just about tollerate 21mp

Lucky you because I can't.

Honestly all these specs for such a street price? I say "super well done Canon". None of us could even dream of such an offer one year ago. We should be all p**ing in our pants of excitement. You still have the option to switch to Nikon if you're not happy and believe they offer more.

Maybe we shoot different things or simply differently than you do and have a different perspective on what the camera should have feature-wise.

Maybe we notice that Nikon isn't doling out the features or build quality on their top models, and seems to being making an effort to give their customers a good value. No Nikon hasn't matched Canon re: IQ... yet, but they are working on it.

Apparently some people have noticed these trends, Nikon is making pretty consistent gains in market share.

The non-gapless sensor would be a joke, unless they're just using the same sensor as the 1ds3 as I suspected earlier...

If it's indeed a new sensor, and not just a firmware update, wouldn't 1ds3 users be clamoring for a sensor swap?

if after three years we waited and the only thing upgraded is the sensor and even that is reused from over a year ago... wow they still dont get it.
at leat they could've not held back on the sensor from us.
i hope that is just some mistake.

From image-resource preview

As compared to the image sensor from the original Canon 5D, the pixel pitch in the 5D Mark II's imager has dropped from 8.2µm to 6.4µm - the same as that of the 1Ds Mark III's chip, and the hardware architecture is also identical to that of the pro camera. However, the Canon 5D II's chip sports new RGB color filters with an improved transmission rate. A couple of improvements from the Canon 50D's image sensor also make their way into the 5D Mark II's imager - an improvement in the per-pixel light sensitive area, and gapless microlenses. There's also been an improvement to the output amplifier, and Canon tells us that there are other unspecified improvements to the way the image is developed on-chip. These changes are all said to come together to mean a cleaner signal that requires less amplification.

so it uses over a year old sensor and three year old AF and mirror box and they couldnt release this a year ago?

if they dont up the fps and AF i just dont get how they cant give us the latest sensor at least.

guess they are same old plan, must hold back fps, AF AND sensor so nothing can endanger 1 series. gotten give nikon credit.

or price it even lower than $2700 and make it a cheap general/landscaper dream (which wouldnt be a bad thing)

Couple mistakes from Canon's site:
Compatible with over 60 Canon EF/EF-S lenses and most EOS System accessories
It's not compatible with EF-S lenses

Digital, single-lens reflex, AF/AE camera with built-in flash
Sorry, no built-in flash...

"the array of red, green and blue coloured filters over the sensor have been made more transmissive,"

i thought it was impossible to get more from this without sacrificng other qualities....
