p.850 #1 · Mustang Air to Air " The Sequel"

Looking back at our original thread it appears we began at 8:35 pm on October 15th, 2006. We locked up something on the site at about 100 pages We just blew through three quarters of a million views on "The Sequel"! Good work all, what a wonderful community of friends!! Thanks for making it what it is!

While we're reminiscing a bit, yesterday I was thinking about our thread and all of you. You would have to assume, based upon the participation, that this thread means a lot to everyone involved. Every once in a while I get an e-mail or a pm from someone telling me what it means to them personally. Like the one about a year into our first MA2A thread from a Dad in the north east. He thanked me for starting such a great conversation and went on tell me that he loved photography, landscapes and aviation were his favorite subjects. He said that he hoped to be able to get out more and expand his photographic skills at some point in the future. He said that our thread was his window to the world for now because he spends every waking hour either working or caring for his disabled young son. Our conversation was his diversion after he had all of his tasks accomplished and his son tucked in bed. Another Gentleman who commented regularly on our first thread e-mailed me and said much the same thing. He loved the conversation, enjoyed the people, has a passion for photography, but is a bit limited in his opportunities because he's in a wheel chair. The most recent, albeit not as dramatic, was the joy and excitement I heard in our new friend Donald Gray's "voice" when you all warmly welcomed him to our group.

I guess my point is, we have absolutely no idea who is looking in on us, and what this group might mean to them. This is an exceptional thing you've all created and kept alive. It's a privilege to be a small part of it.

Lots of fun! I'm glad we made the most of it because there isn't a flake left anywhere this morning.

Didn't notice it before, but that 'papa' signature really does it!

On another note, I came across this (in my eyes) excellent editorial on security and terrorism.

Thanks Jurgen! We are thankful for your courageous fellow Dutchman, heroes are all over the place they just stay in the background until it's time.

It's only one opinion, but it looks like Canon may have finally got it right this time.

It's a 7D for me though, $5K is just too much right now.

I've learned a lot from you all since I found this group early this year. Being a hobbyist, not a photographer, my skills aren't great, but I have fun trying. Now whenever I go to an airshow, or even just hop over to a fly-in breakfast, I take some gear and make attempts to get some interesting shots based on what I've learned here. Thanks everyone for your knowledge and sharing.

Forgive me of this has been posted before, but if you haven't seen the "Gray Eagles Film" before, I thinks it's worth the time for a great story, and the video of the Mustangs. I just got this from another aviation list I subscribe to. The courage and quietness that these people have is difficult for me to comprehend.

My father is a WWII veteran, and it was only recently that he mentioned any of his experiences around me. My wife and I talked he and my mother into a two week trip to the UK two years ago. While he was reminiscing with another older gent in a pub in Wales on that trip, I was amazed at what I learned of my dad's service during the war. I never knew that he was injured by small arms ground fire, while in the back of a C47 during a landing in France for example.

Thank you to all past and present service men and women everywhere that protected, or now protects all of our freedom.

Michael, thank you for posting the video link. I now have a better understanding of what the pilots had to go through in WW2, and have a much greater respect for them because of it, not that I was lacking in that respect, but the video reinforced my respect even more. Again, thanks.

Regards, Colin

Right Jon, when all is said and done you just have to laugh. They do look good in there uniforms though. If only we could clone Bobby Lane ... another good Texan by the way.

Happy New Year!

Thank you, Colin! And happy birthday to us indeed. ISAP is going to be madhouse with a bunch of us getting together. As Tom said in a recent post, practice is a key factor. And I'm going to need a lot more of it between now and then!

I found out information about my grandfathers service in WWII after he died, that I wished I had talked to him about. He did not mention his service time often, a couple of stories here and there. I knew he had a purple heart as it was the only medal he kept out in a glass vase when I was growing up. After his death my grandmother gave me a box full of war time pictures, medals, patches and his discharge paperwork. Come to find out he had been given the bronze star with two oak leaf clusters and his purple heart also had an oak leaf cluster. He was burried with German shrapnel still in his back. I also found out he was being put in for a battlefield commission prior to his final wounds that took him out of the war. I was very proud of him prior to finding all this out and how humble he was about his war time service. This information made me all the more proud of him and wishing I been able to ask questions before he died. He just never talked about it. I also found out he kept in touch with his platoon leader up until his death. They formed a very strong bond to last that many years being so far apart.
