Just got two jets to shoot on the left coast and one in Canada, but I can't go to Canada so they claim they'll bring it to me.

TOPP!

Interesting, I have two Lexar 128GB CF cards that have become corrupt. Today , as I was waiting for Final Cut to render a video I decided to file a claim and get them replaced. Lexar customer service responded within 30 minutes asking for the usual receipt, pictures of the front and back of the cards and a description of the malfunction. The rep then asked for my PayPal email, saying they can’t replace cards due to the China virus, so they will just issue a full refund to my paypal account, which works for me and saves me ten bucks in shipping.

Did Lexar also remind you that calling it a "China virus" is racist?

Jim can defend himself, but there isn't a racist bone in his body. I don't think there is any doubt that the virus originated in China, that's the reference. Not it's people.

You seem to be new here, before throwing around the "racist" label you better know someone pretty well. We do. Let it go, please.

Hi Dan,

Yes, the 5DSR's are not going on the chopping block anytime soon as far as I'm concerned. I'm considering the R5 a tutorial into mirrorless, because that's the direction things are headed. I like it, can't quite figure out the sharpness issue at this point but it's not a deal breaker for me. Looks like the Canon large sensor mirrorless is planned for mid-2021 release and my guy inside Canon already has me slated for one of those. I'm going to go shoot some ducks with the R5 in the next day or so and get more familiar with

Jim,

The name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), which is admittedly a mouthful. Most folks call it COVID-19 or coronavirus, either of which is fine (although COVID-19 is one of many coronaviruses). Interestingly, the "19" in the name refers to the fact that the virus was identified in 2019 (yes, in China), I think on December 31st, the very last day of the year. For a virus that's vast impact upon civilization has been in 2020 (and will have been, when all is said and done), it's kind of a misleading name, to be sure.

There are many people that have written extensively on why calling the virus the "China virus" is xenophobic, hateful, and yes, racist. Here are a few articles written better than I could do:

https://theundefeated.com/features/why-it-is-not-the-chinese-virus/
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-pacific-heart/202003/calling-covid-19-chinese-virus-or-kung-flu-is-racist
https://time.com/5858649/racism-coronavirus/
https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/05/12/covid-19-fueling-anti-asian-racism-and-xenophobia-worldwide
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/23/us/chinese-coronavirus-racist-attacks.html
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/03/20/coronavirus-trump-chinese-virus/
https://www.breezejmu.org/opinion/opinion-calling-it-the-wuhan-virus-isn-t-racist-it-s-worse/article_b9382af6-993a-11ea-8b1d-1717fff55372.html

From the middle of March 2020 to the middle of June 2020 (3 months), the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council received more than 1,800 reports of pandemic-fueled harassment or violence against Asian Americans in 45 states and Washington, D.C. I don't know if any of the commenters on this thread are Asian or have experienced this hate first hand, and if you are truly uninformed on this topic, that doesn't make you intentionally racist. I apologize if that was how my comment was taken. However, using terms like "China virus" (intentionally or not) causes racism.

I don't care how you vote or what media you consume. I don't care if you are caucasian, Asian, black, brown, or some other ethnicity. I don't care where you live, be in California, Texas, Ohio, or Florida.

But my wife is Asian. And my kids are half Asian. So, I do care if you call it the "Asian virus." Please, please, don't.

As for FM, I love this site. I've been a member for 7 years, so I guess I'm a newbie compared to some of you. I lurk and learn more than post, but it's been very informative. I have had multiple cameras, most recently and currently a Canon 5DIV, along with a brilliantly sharp 24-70 f2.8 II, a very nice 70-200 f2.8 II, the incredible 200 2.0 (which I don't have the talent to do justice), the 85 1.2 II, and a bunch of others. I prefer taking photos of people over other subjects, as I find the challenge of capturing non-static objects utterly compelling. I am good with composition, bad with lighting, and infinitely curious about maybe getting an R5. So... there, maybe we have something in common.

Thanks for coming back and articulating your point more clearly. I'm sure we have a lot in common. And yes I realize that Asian Americans have been subject to harassment and violence associated with the pandemic. There are plenty of idiots out there, and I hope your family hasn't suffered.

I saw your join date, and it did occur to me that you could have been here a long time but just don't post much. On the other hand, your accusation was pretty blunt and so I had to wonder how well you knew us on this thread.

We've had plenty of disagreements here, but we usually manage through them via civil discourse. Unlike much of society these days.

A lot of you probably remember I lost my Mom a few years ago. Her birthday is coming up later this month.

I rented a car this week for a business trip to NY, and this is the number plate. My Mom's name was Ida, sort of feels like she's with me.

For any of you who are thinking about the R% here's my update. Still think this is a great camera and happy that I have one to get to know, but as Don Littlefield told me recently, "Quite a learning curve.......!" I spent an hour or so on the phone yesterday with my Canon Buddy and he walked me through menu's and menu'e within menu's that I had no idea existed, most in the AF settings. After our discussion I went out and shot some ducks and a high school kid's soccer game, still not super confident in the autofocus. I shot a thousand images, most we acceptable, a couple were pretty sharp, some not so much. I'll have an RF 100-500 for AFW next week and that will answer some of my questions. My EF-RF adapter is the one with the ND filter drop in and I'm wondering if that is influencing the AF accuracy. The clear drop in filter arrives early next week so I'll have that for AFW as well. So, still very early in the learning curve and unless something changes drastically in the next few days the R5 will not be my go to camera for the air show just because I don't trust it at this point. I have a feeling it's all just a case of working through what the camera likes for my particular shooting style, but it's definitely not like 1DXIII that you pick up, mash the shutter button and end up with 98 keepers out of 100 shots. I'll get there with the R5 I'm sure, but I never have liked feeling uncertain about. anew piece of gear. Today I'm going to put a TSE lens on it and see how it likes that. Hope you all are enjoying a little Fall weather/beauty wherever you're hunkered down, Happy Friday!

As some of you may know, I am of Chinese origin. I came to the U.S. as a student in 1990. I called the virus "Wuhan Virus" numerous times in this very thread. I am not offended one bit some people call it China virus. As a matter of fact, even the Chinese in China initially called the virus "Wuhan pneumonia". The PC stuff is getting out of control. And, the administration recently started to ban CCP members from seeking immigration status in the U.S., that's a very good thing, should have done it 20 years ago...

It well could be that the lack of clear glass filter is influencing your AF accuracy. I have to say, just playing around in the back yard shooting hummingbirds (yes, they are VERY fast) and butterflies, I am amazed at the % of sharp shots. I have pix of the little hummers sparring in mid flight that i never would have gotten before. Almost all of my "bad" pix were me not being able to keep up with them. I still am getting 90% or greater sharp shots.
As for the customization - a different story. I am struggling to find the "best" customization for me. I have been trying different combos and it will be a while before I can be as quick with changing settings on this camera as I have gotten with previous cameras.
This camera is a huge leap forward and I'll bet the R1 or whatever it will be called will even be better. There is no way you won't love this camera!
Be calm and keep shooting!

Nice to hear some reasonable attitudes! The whackos and snowflakes tend to make lots of noise.
