Love this shot even more. In the previous one, I found the hangar door detail a little distracting and was going to suggest reducing DOF to separate and stand out the airplane a little (only I was thinking about something like 200mm @ f/2.8). In this shot, there's less door and more airplane, plus a better angle and more contrast between the bright yellow and dark gray, so it works beautifully without any changes. Wow.

200mm @ f2.8 would be great, but unfortunately there's no enough room for that in the hangar. I'm also afraid it might be difficult to get the perfect DOF even with the 50mm f1.4. I too like the angle of this later photo better, but in this case I'd prefer the whole plane in the pic more. But if I move the plane further from the wall, then the wall might not be the main part of the background anymore, if I still want to keep this a bit higher angle, as further I mvoe the plane from the wall, the more there will be floor visible. Best result might come if the plane would be highwing one and I'd go way down to the floor level. Well, we will see next time what we can come up with

Hmmm, just ran in to this one. I don't actually know how I have done this, but the effect is pretty cool. The plane is sharp enough, but the background has vertical motion blur

Maybe we have flown in to a air pocket very simultaneously?

Looks to me like your airplane is banking (rolling), and he's climbing to maintain position so, in effect, both of you are rolling in relation to the landscape. I see a bit of upward deflection on his horizontal stabilizer that would support the theory.

You are on correct tracks with the banking theory. Looking at the next photos of the series shows that he actually flew right under us. So in that photo he is coming towards us in small angle. And longish shutter speed is enough to make the effect. The horizontal stabilizer deflection is simply because of our (the photo plane, C170) low speed. Sami had to fly with low speeds for his plane if he didn't want to rush right past us

Thanks, I really appreciate you taking the time to give me some input. I'm aiming for the next purchase to be the last body for some years so that future investments will be on L glass Hence the contemplation!

James, I'll echo all that Jim says - especially about the build difference between the 1 series and the 5 series. That said - image quality is basically the same at 21 megapixels. Also as airshow cameras go, the burst rate is decidedly slow on both cameras as compared to the 1DM III. I'm a lot cheaper than Jim is - i have to cut corners where necessary and don't have the expendable cash for a lot of pro bodies - so I bought the 5D M II and have no regrets. If i drop it or break it I can still replaces it almost two times before i equal what I would have paid for a pro body. I am using the 5D MII a lot more than i use the Mark III now days - simply for the image quality alone.

If burst speed isn't important - then it really is just a choice between bullet proof build quality vs being able to replace it half way down the road for a lot less.
I have full confidence that as long as I take good care of the 5D MII - it will last as long as my nearly 5 year old 10D - which is still going strong today. Plus I bought the battery grip and the heft and feel is similar enough to the MIII that it doesn't bother me at all to switch back and forth.

Hope this helps.

As a 4-ship formation of F-15's roars over my house on its way to a Boston Pops Esplanade concert flyover, I just thought it would be a nice time to wish everyone here in the US a happy 4th of July.

Best wishes to everyone stateside, and to all our men and women overseas.

You guys are going to be disappointed in me, I had an opportunity to be in the Addison formations and a four ship this evening. I let them both slide. Sheila and I spent a quiet weekend with each other and took in fireworks with our Grands tonight. As we left home to meet up with the kids, the four ship of T-6's made a low pass over our house just to torment me. A small factor in my decision to pass on the formations was our ambient at the scheduled times of flight..........101, add the 30 to 40 degrees that seeps into the cockpit from the Pratt and you have a real broiler with wings. Of course no self respecting warbird jock would do any of that without a full flight suit, boots, helmet and Nomex gloves, need I say more?! Makes you appreciate our men and women in uniform all the more. Need a missing man formation? Call me in October

I forget who said: "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing." But truer words were never spoken. Despite how much you enjoy flying, and despite the fact that this flight was an opportunity to show respect and love of country, both the flight and the opportunity were less important than the things you chose to do.

Seems crystal-clear to me that you did the right thing.

It's good to see so many new pages and great photos after just a short trip. Last Wednesday I joined a friend (Assistant Purser with KLM) on a 4-day trip to Manila, Philippines. I had a blast with the crew and local people, I got to experience a part of the 80th birthday party of Imelda Marcos (the shoe loving former first lady of the Philippines) and had a good time overall. I didn't shoot much aviation, and the pics that I shot I'm not allowed to share, so your luck runs out there.

If you guys want I can put some non-aviation photos on here though.... As a starter just one, from a street kid in Manila.

Jim -

Thanks for the compliment!

Other air show photogs whom I've spoken with have said that "the light" at Binghamton is just terrific. I was glad that some of it came out that day.... I would have loved to have seen it Saturday too but I sprained my wrist late Friday afternoon, and could not support my camera lens combo....

I volunteer to fill in for you the next July By the time the T-6's and the B-24 got up one had to set the iso to 1600 so I'm sure the temp had dropped to at least 100.

Dear XHawkeye,

Too bad they couldn't have launched a bit earlier for you. Back in the old days we used to squeeze every bit of flying time out of events like that. Since fuel got crazy it seems, understandably, that everyone is in a rush to get up and down with minimum fuel burn. The 24 burns about $1.200 an hour at current rates and the CAF doesn't have two nickels to rub together, which is largely their own fault (another subject entirely). If I'm up in the Six just loafing, I can get her down to about 37 an hour, which translates to approx. $200.00 at TKI prices. Formation work brings that up a bit, so I figure $300 for an hour. None of that includes fixed costs like engine reserves, annual, insurance, which easily brings the hourly outlay to $500 plus an hour. That being said, all reason disappears when that Pratt begins to come to life.

Dear Rob,

Cool shots Buddy! You have passed the silent pop quiz that admits you to the exclusive, definitely addicted, section of MA2A members group. The question was.............. what do you do on a Sunday morning, following a holiday when it's pouring rain? Your correct answer obviously was, schlep your gear out to DFW and shoot airplanes in the rain.
