I'll partially answer James' question. The 1Ds MKII and III are wonderful bodies. My impression is that they will serve you better over the long haul (rain or shine) than the less expensive bodies. I say this as a long time owner of all of the top line pro bodies, knowing the build/chassis quality of those products. JBear is also familiar with the top line chassis and he has been shooting with his 5D MKII for long enough now to give you an educated opinion on that body. I don't think you'll be disappointed no matter what direction you go, but you obviously keep your bodies for an extended period of time, so you should have all the facts when you shell out your hard earned cash.
Canon could prove me wrong Monday morning, but I get the impression that nothing in the Pro line is waiting in the wings for release, due to the economy. The camera manufacturers love guys like us, but the folks that really ring their economic bells are the wire services/newspapers who buy 50 to 100 cameras at a whack, and obviously that isn't happening, may not happen again for a very long time. So my feeling at the moment is we are shooting with the best that's going to be available for a bit, that's one of the reasons I bought two more 1Ds MKIII bodies recently.
It's becoming ever more obvious that the 1.3 trillion the libs said had to be appropriated immediately for "stimulus, has done nothing, now they are rumbling about the possible necessity of a second trillion "stimulus", that will do twice as much as the zero the first money did. If this continues, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nikon and Canon coming out with some pretty healthy rebate coupons on a lot of their gear. If you remember, the first trillion had to be done immediately or unemployment could rise to 8%, ummmmm I guess we should have done nothing, because most of the country is at 9.5, with pockets at 11/12. Only now we added 1.3 trillion to our financial backs.
