I see your lovely rockscape and raise you a sandscape. Taken at White Sands National Park, NM.

In case you haven't seen it, the Canon R5 announcement is scheduled for July 9th, along with six new lenses. My Canon sources tell me actual shipping time shouldn't be too much after that. I'm hoping to have one copy in hand by early August. Has anyone shot with a camera that incorporates IBIS? I'm wondering how that works as compared to or along with optical stabilization. Is IBIS more of a video gyroscopic type of stabilization? I think the 1DX III has IBIS, but I haven't really dug not that yet.

My Olympus EM-1X has IBIS. It actually moves the sensor around from signals from the built in gyros. It works fabulously well and provides 7 stops of stabilization for lenses that have no VR of their own. With some lenses with VR it works in conjunction to provide another half stop stabilization The cool thing is that the camera also has a high resolution mode where it shifts the sensor around to create an image of up to 80MP on a tripod or 50MP handheld from the base 20MP sensor. When used in appropriate places (such as your architectural work) it's fabulous, giving higher resolution and much lower noise profiles. Overall I think it works better than the old Nikon lens VR, but I haven't tried the new Z mirrorless cameras and their IBIS.

What Erich said :-)
And the latest mk3 version will do that 50mp handheld. Quite a system.

Thank you, Lady Jo.

Thanks also for that sandscape – I’m very envious of you being able to visit white sands – what a location for photography.

It was an amazing place, for sure. We only passed through briefly, late morning during our road trip in February; I’d love to be there for dawn or dusk to catch the light on those dunes.

For once the plan worked…. I’d been in position for over an hour, hoping that the dawn light would light up Alnwick castle. Sadly, there was a lot of cloud down to the horizon, blocking out the sun as it came up. I was about to give up – then suddenly there was a ten minute brake and I got this …. a result!

…… Or on a cloud and moon free night, taking pictures of the Milky Way core and light painting the dunes.

Glad it worked out Nick! Beautiful castle! My "bucket list" has a long trip to the "Mother Country" and British Isles.

Thanks for your analysis Erich. Guess I should mount up the 1DX III and see how it does.

I had to look up Alnwick Castle; new one on me. Great photo of an obviously spectacular place. Hop on Google maps and look at the satellite view... to the east a bit there is a huge garden; I am intrigued by the fact it is labelled 'Poison Garden'; there must be a story there!

And yes; I'm sure the starlight painting White Sands wouldn't be too shabby. There were many signs and warnings about taking plenty of water and not getting lost; it would be easy to get disoriented and it was already getting pretty hot by the time we left, in February mind, with all the sunlight reflecting back like it does off snow. So I bet it would reflect starlight pretty well too.

Elijah,

Welcome to the family of aviators. You are gonna have a blast, Sir. You will enjoy, be challenged by, scared shitless on occasion by, and utterly astonished as to how naturally the pilot/aircraft complex comes together. You won't be able to stop learning, and you'll get damned good at it. Choose your instructor carefully. Their probably aren't any "scarf and goggle" types left - although Jim looks like a pretty good candidate - but get one if you can. I learned on "steam gauges" and most of the time, even during training for my private they were covered

Going back a bit to the whole face mask issue, for me it's a no-brainer that we should all be wearing them. Remember when you were a kid and your parents told you to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze so you don't spray your germs all over the place? Same thing now, but even more so.

Elijah, welcome to the fold! This is the start or a lifelong journey. Whether you have 10 hours or 10,000, there's always something new to learn and great things to discover. Sample as many kinds of aviation as you can.

Thanks, there's definitely a lot to learn. And one thing for sure... the only thing that makes an airplane fly is many many Benjamin's

I had to dig my log book out to run a checksum on my memory. 6/12/75 is first entry and 43.6 hours later on 09/04/75 I took my checkride in the same old Cessna 150. I was working the G/Yshift so had plenty of daylight hours.

Yeah, don't make me feel too young, guy

Yes Alnwick Castle is quite a place. It’s the family seat of the Percy family – the Dukes of Northumberland. That part of the UK was the subject of conflict for many years prior to the act of union. The coastal plain is rich agricultural land – thus the conflicts. There are five major Castles within about thirty miles. Lindisfarne in the north, then heading south, Bamburgh, Alnwick, Dunstanburgh, and Warkworth. All are open to the public in one way or another. Two are still lived in. Two are ruins. The (very) large garden at Alnwick is the work of the present Duchess. The poison garden is a small, and carefully fenced off part.

Found during another deep dive into my raid array.

Another appearance of what I called the worlds most disappointing lighthouse. Bamburgh Lighthouse with the Inner Farne Islands in the distance.

I had the opportunity to go to the Roswell Air Center last week and photograph all of the aircraft that are either being scrapped are being stored there, due to the current Covid-19 situation.

There are over 470 aircraft there, currently, and four to six of them go out each day, being added back into the fleets of American, Frontier and United.

The airport director did a rough estimate of the amount of assets on the ground, currently, and he said it was over $15 BILLION. That's a lot of cash.

Hope everyone has a great week.

Thunder Over Cedar Creek is a go on the Fourth of July. Chandler and I are going down to shoot it for Randy Ball’s foundation. Canon has extended my 600mm loan another couple of weeks so that will work out nicely. The 600 is a perfect lens for Thunder. The weather looks like it will be outstanding! Looking forward to knocking the rust off my air show technique.
