the other evening i was at my local airport, after years of trying and many right place wrong time moments i finally got myself a male northern harrier known as the 'gray ghost"
so yesterday evening i returned to the airport, i was set up for birds in when this guy came flying in so i quickly readjusted my settings for prop blur
i then went after shots of another very first for me...a short eared owl, never even seen one before and had the perfect opportunity, lighting perfect, bird pretty much right in front of me....EXCEPT...after shooting the helicopter at 1/80, in my thrill to see my first seo, i forgot to change my settings back
did come away with an artsy fartsy shot of him though
1/80 @ 700mm handheld, NOT the way to do birds in flight, funny how with airline traffic way down the birds of prey are moving in, i don't even hear the airport employees driving around chasing off the birds with noise poppers when they get close to the runways like they use to do
Wow, love the big cats and snow leopards are so beautiful. So I'll raise you a bigger cat . This is my friend who whenever I go see him he trots over close to me and chuffs at me. The keeper tells me that it's a greeting between cats, so I guess he knows I like him .
My longtime Buddy from Canon called me this afternoon to catch up. He wanted to know if I still would like to take a look at the new 600 III, they've been pretty scarce since the first release. One will be arriving early next week, and with a no rush, have fun time limit attached. I'm scratching my head over where I can launch off to in order to truly test this monster.

Hummm- where or what to shoot? Some might suggest Birds. However, with a 600mm anything that might be regarded as cruel and unusual punishment.
That's about the only option Nick. Love Field is within the Dallas shelter in place restriction and the left wing county judge has orders in place that can get one fined/arrested or both. I think I can go shoot at Zane's location at DFW without a problem and be socially distant, or I could run over to Alliance.
What I have wanted to evaluate is the difference in performance of the 600III compared to my beloved 200-400/1.4X lens. That lens puts me at 560mm with the 1.4X flipped on, obviously at a higher f-stop, but I'm not sure that makes much difference in today's low noise/iso environment. I want to see how it pairs with the 1DXIII and the 5DSR, although I'm thinking the SR's might go away if the EOSR5 is half what it appears to be. I'm looking forward to shooting with it, and I'm sure it will be a stellar piece of glass, the challenge at the moment is finding suitable subjects.
We lost a Dear One last night. Clara's mother left us after nearly 93 years! Short hospitalization due to complications with COPD, not Covid related. 78 years of smoking can do that to you; rumor within the family is she taught the Marlboro Man to smoke! She never could beat the habit, yet until the last couple years it really never impacted her quality of life; one of the lucky ones.
She will be missed, was full of life and lived it well. Mother of 11, 27 Grandchildren, 42 Grandchildren (if you include the 2 still in the oven) and 4 or 5 Great Grandchildren. One of our best memories was putting the then 77 year old on a horse and taking her for a ride in the Rocky Mountains west of Colorado Springs - it was the first time she was ever on a horse.
Since no one can travel, even the children who lived local couldn't visit her in the hospital so we doing the family gatherings via Zoom. Different and yet very helpful and meaningful. She understood the Body was only that, a body, and this life is only a stop on the way to being with the Lord. Knowing that is very comforting to all of us.

Commercial considerations aside (and none of my bees wax) I guess it’s all down to how the 600III speaks to you. I’m sure that the 600III will have state of art IQ and is a little lighter – OK – less heavy. On the other hand, the 200-400 has a much closer minimum focus distance. But you already have that close up stuff covered with the 100-400. Hummm.
That R5 looks like it’s going to shake things up a bit. Not least because there is likely an R5S (or whatever) waiting in the wings. That huge R mount lens throat has thrown the lens design bones in the air. Have you seen the size / shape of the RF 70-200 f2.8 in comparison with the EF? Looks ground up different to me.
Good luck with your “Office of the Budget” negotiations.
Sorry for your loss, she sounds like my kind of lady! Thank you for your wonderful perspective, we get so focused on the temporal it is good to be reminded how fleeting this all is.
