Kev,

I think I understand what you are trying to achieve by using an ND filter. You want the prop to be blurred, and the whole background to appear in motion, like a panning shot at a really slow shutter speed. The narrow DOF will also blur it more due to the Bokeh.

Apart from focus, I think your other major issue is going to be how much darker the view finder becomes - will you actually be able to see what you are wanting to shoot. Live view may be needed.

Sorry I can't offer more specific advice, but I've yet to do an Air 2 Air Shoot.

Yes Mark, that's pretty much it, although not the part about the background in motion as I think the relative distances will too large to achieve that, but to simply throw it out of focus by using a wider aperture. Normally if you shoot at f/2.8 or f/4.0 unless you're in a low light situation your speeds are going to be up in the 1000th sec range or more which will freeze the action, and the props even if I pushed the cameras iso down to 50.

Good point on viewing as well. The -6 stop filter looks darker than a circ polarizer which is a concern if it doesn't focus and the viewfinder is too dark to focus manually. But, I doubt the -2 stop is enough to make a difference, possibly stack 2 of those for -4 stops perhaps?

Cheers,
Kev

Kev, I have no direct experience with ND filters, but I think it's safe to assume that the AF will work just fine with a 6-stop ND filter.

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_value

Typical broad daylight conditions mean an EV value of about 15. (At ISO 100, f/16 and 1/125th) The D3 has an AF working range of -1 to +19 EV (ISO 100). You could even stack two 6-stop filters and still be within working AF range.

As for the darker viewfinder, here's a trick to simulate the effect of a 6-stop ND filter: Mount a lens with, say, maximum f/2.8 aperture. Switch to Av mode and set f/22. (From f/2.8 to f/22 is 6 stops. If you mount an f/4 lens, set it to f/32 and an f/1.4 prime should be set to f/11) Now look through the finder and use the DoF preview button! By pressing the DoF preview you can instantly switch from wide open to 6-stop darker viewfinder. You'll see that 6 stops is like donning a pair of dark sunglasses. Considerably darker, yes, but still enough light to see in daylight conditions.

Good Morning My Friends!

I'm going to get a post in before the little ones rise and shine.

Wow! Wow! Remember the good old days of 900 pages (last week!) ?

David, So glad you're home safe and sound! Thank you for your considerable sacrifices on our behalf!

Great images Jurgen, wonderful feel!

Roel, I guess that would be accepted at A.net, and anywhere else you submitted it!! Incredible work Buddy! As usual!!

Kas, nice work on the C-47. That's a beautiful restoration!

Donald, Sorry I didn't have an opportunity to read your post prior to your airshow shoot this weekend. Now that you've "been there/done that" I'm sure you have all the answers you need. If not, ask away. I'm so glad you had the opportunity to go, and even better to go with friends from our MA2A family. I look forward to your imagery, as always.

Rodolfo, No editing software anywhere, on any of your computers?! That's a violation of the MA2A photographers code of operations, subparagraph 9, line 8 which reads "a MA2A family member must at all times have within arms length a magic box equipped with the proper software to edit their (or a fellow MA2A member's) award winning imagery at a moment's notice" Normally such a violation requires a 1 week surrender of the culprit's MA2A union card, but due to your longs standing, and outstanding participation in the family, this will be waived in lieu of a personal visit to MA2A world headquarters in the next 12 calendar months. Can't wait to see your shots!!

Leo, Apple wishes you could get that with an iPhone When I save an image "for web use" I think it drops exif info to minimize the file size. That was captured with one of my 1Ds MKIII bodies that happened to be laying on the passenger seat from Weston's soccer game. I didn't know I could drive with my knees and shoot

Glenn, Nice classic Pitts image, great disc!

Sheila and I had two flag football games, a soccer game and a baseball practice yesterday, beginning at 8 am and ending at six. It was a day of non-stop bop for sure. Today we're headed to the hangar for R&R.

Thanks Geert, that's very useful info. These ND filters at 77mm aren't exactly cheap so I don't want to buy one if it does not work for what I want it for. At least now I know what the -6 stop filter will look like through the viewfinder!

Cheers,
Kev

Jan-Arie,

what day are you headed to Alliance?
I will probably be in a position to confirm my trip in the next couple of weeks.

Eglin was a great show! The Raptor was awesome! I have about 1k+ of shots to go through. Will post some later.

I had the chance to meet Mark (MrPlastic) and his son Griffin. I have to thank Griffin again for letting me use his lens! What a group of nice guys!

I'm Flying Wed Oct 27th AMS-ORD-DFW
And returning Mon Nov 1st DFW-IAD-AMS

I have looked at the opportunity to stay a little longer but with the photo flight etc the max of my budget was reached but it's going to be worth it I'm sure.

Thanks for the info Jan-Arie,

I have 2 options:

same dates as you - GLA-LHR-DFW-LHR-GLA

or

a few days earlier and go

GLA-LHR-IAH drive to Dallas then DFW-LHR-GLA

I need to see if my budget can stretch the extra 3 or 4 days to allow me to go to Wings over Houston.

Good morning all-

Here is a BA#7 shot, straight OOC.

I post this shot with much haste so that my driver (Rodolfo) catches a break.

This image is copyrighted by the owner

Rodolfo is right on every point regarding yesterday. Unbearably hot, sweltering humidity, hades-like heat reflection off the concrete ramp (which got me a stern lecture from my medical watchdog, also known as my loving wife ))

One of the highlights of the show was the great presence made by VFC-111, the aggressor squadron that calls KNQX their home. Originally VF-111, they resurrected the squadron colors to keep a great tradition alive. They fly Northrop F-5's, bought from the Swiss second-hand and renamed F-5N's.

It was soooooooo hot and miserable at the end of the day, I decided I'd rather go back to the car than stop and buy myself a VFC-111 shirt! Pant, pant.

Again, straight OOC...

@Nick, feel free to post say a landscape shot along with some info on your workflow in it. There is room for us all to learn something somewhere.

All,

I promised “Shooter” that I would get into aviation work this year. So far I've hooked up with Donald and Rich to go to Yeovilton (UK) in July. Now I have to practice the shooting (thanks for the advice offered here) and adapt my post processing for aviation / web. The image posted under is by way of a progress report on both. It is of a BN Trislander climbing away out of Southampton / Eastleigh (UK). Taken with a 5D and 400 5.6 L, 1/160th @ f16 and ISO 200.

Workflow: Import from memory card to disk (RAW files) using LR 2.6. Selected frame copied to input folder for DXO. Use DXO 5.3 for de-mosaic and lens correction + exposure / highlight recovery – if needed. (I do not use DXO lighting module – too much contrast at this stage.) Save DXO output as DNG file to output folder. Sync DXO output folder in LR. In LR develop module – set Profile to Camera Neutral and Point Curve to Linear. At this stage I'm trying to achieve a neutral / natural “good look” on screen. Set the WB from the grey cloud (there is plenty of it !), and apply hefty crop (about 60%). No Tone adjustments needed – all left at LR defaults. Set Clarity to +26 (check at 100% view to avoid “mush”), vibrancy to +5, saturation to +5. Capture sharpening set so as not to give viable halo @100% - Amount 25%, Radius .7, Detail 27, Masking 25. Noise reduction – Luminance 50, Colour 25 (default). Export as Tiff to Photoshop CS3. De-spot image with clone tool (plenty of them at f16!). I'm now trying to get a “look”. Run Script Plug-In – PercepTool (by George De Wolf). Set Perception to 70% , gamma to 1.1 (light bump in midrange), saturation to 110 (from 100 to compensate the gamma change). Oops .. overdid it – set layer opacity to 63%. ! Flatten layers, convert from ProPhoto RGB to sRGB, reduce image to 800 pixels on long dimension – using Bi cubic Sharper. Save as Tiff, Sync back into LR. Export from LR - save as JPEG, quality 100, output sharpen for screen, amount standard.

Cs & Cs welcome.

Regards,

Nick.
