Edit: The issue was not the lens, but a Tripod Mount Ring from Hell that makes a rattling noise.
Hi everybody, I need a bit of help here.
I just bought the wonderful EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS MK II. The image quality is really wow!
I don't know whether this is a potential issue, but here goes: There is small sound - almost like a loose screw - coming from it when I rotate the lens 90 degree from normal to upright position - and verse versa. But I'm thinking that it could just be the IS-group that is setting itself in its cave? I think I heard about this before?
Anyway, the IS works really great, is it doesn't seem broken, and the sound is coming whether or not the lens is attached to the camera and with the IS no and off.
Could somebody just check with their IS-lens if they have the same "issue"? The IS is working near silent on my BTW, no weird sounds when I just use it.

Hi Nils,
My copy does make a very soft "clunk" sound that i would describe as dropping a small plastic cup into its holder from about 1cm height. It's very soft but it's there. I've wondered about it just like you but I never felt the need to put up a thread. I'm glad you did though
I'm curious what others have to say about it. I don't worry about it. This lens delivers. Every time.

Stay good,

Hi Ralph.
I'm not sure whether it is the same sound but my is sounding like either metal or glas dropping onto metal. Hmmmm

What body you use?
had the same noise when my first 1D X was on the 70-200 II
that body was after 1 month replaced by Canon. to much problems
now on my 2e body, no sound at all.

Well I took the lens off the camera and rotated it in all directions. When shaking it gently, I hear this clunk sound. Maybe you should record the sound so we can listen to it

Well, a 1D X too. But I get the sound with the lens de-attached.

Stoffer, I hear a very minor sound like you describe when I rotate or shake my lens (70-200 MK II). I agree with your assessment that it sounds like the IS group settling into place. I never noticed it until you described the noise and I listened very carefully.
