p.1 #1 · Paris with DP2M and Nex 7

Two weeks ago I spent 4 days together with my family in Paris. The main focus of this trip was sightseeing, having fun and eating some good food.

But of course I also wanted to meet my friend Philippe and shoot together with him. We managed to do this on one evening at the Pont Alexandre III and on one morning at the Louvre. Since this was not a photography trip I decided to leave the Leica equipment at home and just take my new Sigma DP2M and a small tripod. Philippe used his Nex 7 with his Leica lenses.

I’m satisfied with the images I got out of the DP2M and did not regret leaving the Leica at home. The biggest problem with the DP2M is, that the necessary postprocessing of the images is quite time-consuming (compared to other cameras like the Leica M9 or Canon 5DII). First I have to use two converters (SPP and LR) and second I don’t like the colors of the Sigma files without further adjustments. For example I often had to reduce the yellow saturation to get pleasing results. Nevertheless I really like the DP2M.

Here are my images:

Pont de la Tournelle:

Institut du monde arabe:

Pont Alexandre III

Pont Neuf:

Pont des Arts:

Louvre:

Cité (Métro Paris):

Cathédrale Notre-Dame:

Place de la Concorde:

Jardin des Tuileries:

Place Georges-Pompidou:

Tour Eiffel:

Now it's your turn Philippe. And thanks again for your help in Paris.

Boris

These are great shots! For the first time, I can say that the DP2M seems to have "something" special in the IQ department. Very nice, Boris.

I keep telling myself I have no interest in this camera because of the reasons you have cited regarding workflow. But then I look at the amazing quality of these images and my interest is rekindled.

Just out of interest, how many spare batteries did you carry with you on this trip?

Wow, very cool photos. Were you up at jet lagged super early hours to get so many locations sans people. Wonderful!

Thanks guys!

@calvininjax: I carried 4 spare batteries, but never used more than 2 on one day.

@timpdx: Only once I got up very early to shoot the Louvre (and the bridges Pont Neuf and Pont des Arts) together with Philippe. At the other places I sometimes had to wait a few minutes to get a shot without people. Luckily my family is very understandig (and used to this situation).

A spectacular set! I really was wowed by the metro shots.

I'd love to see a FF version of this sensor in a body like the RX1, that I'd pay 3K for.

Boris, my favourites here are

Institut du monde arabe - for the foreground sculpture details and vividness with a suitable grey but still fascinating background
Pont Alexandre III - the last one, like a well taken postcard
Cité (Métro Paris) - the first and third ones (and also congrats to the architects of course), powerful and to my taste down to the last rivet

...and I would like to thank you for the inspiration. It was a joy scrolling down the page.

Wow Boris, these are great! I love the whole Cité set and the last one from the Louvre. Also the city skyline, which actually looks kind of uncharacteristic for this camera. It doesn't feel heavy in the shadows like many DP1/2M images. Did you do something different with it? (looks like the nasty orange streetlight color saturation was pulled back a fair amount) Also nice to see the camera produces lovely starbursts from pinpoint light sources.

I was with Boris only on two occasions, for the Pont Alexandre III, and for the Louvre and Ile de la Cité metro station. I wouldn't read too much into the camera comparison, because Boris could make any camera shine...
All 3 shots with NEX 7 and Leica Summilux 50.
