OK this may strike you as odd, but I'm just not an early adopter and I've always been so pleased with my 5Dclassic that I didn't feel I needed to upgrade to the 5DmkII when it came out. I figured I'd upgrade to the 5DmkIII and skip the mkII.
However, somewhere in between came the desire to use a 50L and I did a test in my regular camera store with my 5Dclassic and the 50L. That was about two months ago. Turned out the centre point was most accurate, but I only got about 20% images that were sharp or close to sharp. The fact that the 5Dclassic and the 50L wasn't a great AF combo was written all over, so I conceded and started looking for a new body so I could shoot a 50L and get lots of keepers.
Because there has been a consensus about the 5DmkII AF not being an improvement from the 5Dclassic, I never thought of the mkII as an option to shoot a 50L. Just for the hell of it, when I was at the same store I asked to hold their rental 5DmkII + 50L for a couple of minutes, put in my CF card and shot away.
When I came home and loaded the images in LR 4.1, I was baffled at the results. I had 80% keepers! Granted, I used centre point only, but I had done the same with the 5Dclassic.
Conclusions?
As it is widely spread that 5Dclassic AF and 5DmkII AF are roughly the same, I would say there must be something strange going on. My 5Dclassic focuses very fast and reliably with all of my lenses (35L, 70-200mkII, 16-35mkII, 50/1.8mkII). It does very badly with the 50L. Then the 5DmkII focuses extremely well with the 50L. I must say that it's not the same 50L I used on the 5Dclassic as the one I used today on the 5DmkII.
Anyway based on what I shot today, I think I may be interested in a 5DmkII after all.

I bought a an EF 50 1.2L in 2007 to use on my 5D and experienced basically the same problem as you. I did a lot better than 20% keepers with the center point (the outer points were 20% keepers!). But, too flaky for serious shooting. And, yep, bought a 5D2 in Spring 2009 and my keeper rate skyrocketed! In good light the outer points were very good and the center pt was dead on most of the time. The odd thing is, whatever AF tweaks Canon did--faster processor, improved algorithms--didn't make much different for my other lenses (they worked fine with both cameras), but worked a treat for the EF 50 1.2L.
