Thanks to online forums like FM, particularly this alternative gear board and the Zeiss threads, I've been inflicted with GAS and acquired or traded a few gears

I'm interested to see what systems/lenses/cameras have you had, why you bought or sold them, and any stories or emotions you have with your gears

Ok I'll play

Cameras, chronologically:

Canon 400D, the start of it all.
Upgraded to a 40D because I wanted the better ergonomics.
Upgraded to a 5D, because of FF.
The 5D died (sensor) and I bought a 5DII.
Added a sigma DP2 as a more compact camera.
Added a 5D again as a second camera because I was into wedding photography at that time.
Sold the sigma DP2.
Sold the 5D when I stopped doing weddings (because of back pain).
Bought a Leica X1 out of curiosity, I liked what I was seeing from the lens.

So right now I still have a 5DII and a Leica X1.

Lenses:

sigma: 10mm fisheye, 150mm macro
Tokina: 12-24mm
Canon: 18-55, 18-55 IS, 55-250IS, 50/1.8, 85/1.8, 17-55/2.8 IS, 70-200/4 L IS, 24-105 L, 17-40L, 24/1.4 L, TS-E24II L, 35/1.4 L, 50/1.2 L, 85/1.2 L, 100/2.8 L IS macro, 135/2 L

These are the lenses I had before (I might have forgotten some). Some were crop sensor lenses and had to be sold when I moved to FF.
When I stopped with wedding photography I sold all lenses I had left from that list and went all zeiss because of the (to me) superior rendering.

So my lenses right now:

Zeiss 21/2.8 ZE, 35/1.4 ZE, 50/2 MP ZE.

I also had the 35/2 ZE, but sold it after getting the 1.4

I'm happy with my gear and not looking back. Also really enjoy MF.

Here's my list. In chronically order.
- Pentax ME with pentax 50/2. Old camera of my dad, used for my baby pictures and used it myself for years. Really loved it and still use it.

- Canon 300D with 18-55 and 75-300. First digital camera back in 2003.
- After a short wile I noticed I missed the prime use of the pentax, so sold the 75-300 and 18-55 and replaced them for a canon 20/2.8, 50/1.8 and 85/1.8.
- Added a 35/2 and 200/2.8 (my first and only L lens

)
- Replaced the 300D with a 30D when it first came out.
- Added a eos 30 hoping it would be the same as the pentax (it wasn't, so hardly used)

- Started to have less and less fun in photography, took the pentax only for the joy of using it.

- Sold the 85/1.8, 35/2 and 200/2.8 and kept my 20/2.8, 50/1.8 and the 30D.

- Bought a leica M8 in 2009 when the M9 came out. Together with a zeiss ZM 28/2.8
- Added a zeiss 50/2 planar
- Added a leica 18/3.8 SE (start of the LAS)
- Replaced the zeiss 50 planar for a leica 50 summarit
- Bought a VC 35/1.4 nokton
- Sold the VC since it wasn't my cup of tea.
- Sold the leica 18mm and zeiss 28mm
- Bought a leica 28mm summicron (best lens so far)
- Bought the same leica 18mm back (never sell a leica lens...)
- Added a zeiss zm 35/2.8 c-biogon
- Bought a leica 50mm summicron

And now I'm here

Now thinking of selling the M8, 18, 35 and maybe 28 for a M9 with 35 cron, but haven't decided yet.

Compared to others, mine is short.

1.Starting with a Minolta Dynax 300si with a mediocre zoom lens.(I forgot which brand)
2.In 2004, first digital camera 300D with 17-40L, 135L. Later 85/1.8. (85/1.8 was sold after 3 month)
3.In 2005, first batch of Leica primes: 35/2 I, 50/1.4 I, 135/2.8 I, 250/4 I. Later 28/2.8 I, 70-210/4.
4.From 2006, Canon 30D, EF28-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8L, EF300/4L & mostly Leica lenses: 19/2.8 II, 21-35, 35-70/4, 28/2.8 II, 35/2 II, 35/2.8 III, 50/2 II, 50/1.4 E60, 60/2.8, 80/1.4, 90/2.8 II, 90/2 AA, 100/2.8 APO, 180/2.8 APO, 180/3.4 APO, 180/2 APO, 70-180 APO, 80-200/4, 105-280/4.2, 280/4 APO. Mamiya: 120/4 macro, 80/4 macro. Rollei 16/2.8, 35/1.4. Contax 50/1.7. Canon FD 55/1.2 Aspherical.

In 2012, I'd probably look for a used 5D2 + Eg-s to replace my old faithful 30D...

- Started out with shitty Canon point-and-shoot.
- Played around with Dad's old Canon T80
- Decided I wanted to upgrade my shitty compact to something more substantial. Purchased Canon G10
- Wanted more DoF control. Purchased a Pentax K-X with kit lens
- Upgrade kit lens to a DA16-45/f4
- Got my first nifty fifty - Pentax SMC-A 50/f1.7
- Got my second nifty fifty - Pentax FA50/f1.4
- Sold off DA16-45 to fund Sigma 10-20/f3.5
- Sold off K-X body to fund a K-7 body
- Wanted to try a variety of high end primes. Purchased bulk lot of DA15/f4, DA40/f2.8, FA43/f1.9, DA70/f2.4 from eBay (got a bargain too)
- Decided that I wanted to consolidate my kit, so sold off FA50, DA40, DA70, Sigma 10-20
- Purchased FA77/f1.8
- Purchased Pentax Super ME film body

At the end of that I've ended up with a Pentax K-7, Super ME, DA15/f4, FA43/f1.9 and FA77/f1.8

Where to now? Think I've been bitten by the rangefinder bug. Possibly look to pickup an M6/M8 and some Zeiss glass.

Lenses, way too many to count. I do have fond memories of the Sigma 75-200 f/2.8-3.5, the Tokina 80-200 2.8, the Canon 17-55, a Nikon 105 f/2.5 that a friend AI'd for me and a beat-to-hell Nikkor 50 f/2 I carried on the F in my backpack in college.

I think investements in lenses are worthless if you don't mount them to a proper camera.

Unless you buy everything with resale in mind...

Started with a Voigtlander 6x9 folder from my gradfather in childhood.
Jump about 15 years and there it starts :
- Canon 90ProIS - expensive bridge camera at the time ( for me )
- Canon EOS 300D - first DSLR with kit and Tamron 70-300 - too slow for child indoor so
- Canon EF 85/1.8 and 35/2.0 - nice kit, but discovered the alt forum here on FM so
- Canon lenses gone, Zeiss Jena 20/2.8, Zeiss Contax 28/2.8, 50/1.7 85/1.4
- left Zeiss for Leica : Leica Summicrons 35/2 and 90/2
- finaly gone FF : a used 1Ds
- switched back to Zeiss with the 1Ds and got some dream lenses for FF : 28/2,50/1.4,85/1.4,100/2,135/2.8 and a Canon 200/2.8. In itself a wonderful kit, but even in its minimalistic form ( 1Ds + 28/2 + 100/2 ) very heavy for lugging it around all day so
- sold all of the above and got a Sony NEX 3 plus CV15/4.5, ZM35/2, CV90/3.5
- because of wide angle performance upgraded to NEX 5N plus ZM18/4 and Leica 90/4 and hold on to the ZM 35/2. Really like this, but I would rather have a ZM85/2.8 on the long end if that would exist.

During this time I also played with various film systems :
- got a Mamiya RB67 with two lenses
- I found it rather heavy and in need of tripod, so decided that if tripod then go one step bigger : switched to a Sinar F1 plus 210, 150 and 90 lenses
- too big, so got a Crown Graphic for the LF
- got a AGFA 6x9 folder
- right now trying a Fuji 690 - hope it will stay, as I kind of like these big B&W negatives

Started with a Nikon Coolpix 950 (2 megapixel, fixed 3x zoom lens). I had wanted a manual film SLR, but my dad had the foresight to convince me that it would be better to learn photography with digital (still somewhat new/unusual at the time) where I could take all the pictures I wanted (64MB CF card!) without paying for film development.

Moved up to the original Canon Digital Rebel and kit lens when it was fairly new; added nifty-50 (first experience with wide apertures and prime lens image quality) and 100/2.8 Macro lenses. Also picked up a Peleng 8mm circular fisheye from eBay, which was M42 mount on an adapter.

Several years later, kit lens broke after a small drop; got a 17-40/4 L.

Got a used EOS3 and started to consider switching to film. I loved the full-frame viewfinder experience, and ability to use 17-40L at full width. I home developed black and white Ilford films, but never got as far as printing anything; also, some color slide film.

Then I discovered that used Canon 5D cameras both existed and were in my budget. After one time using the 5D, the EOS3 went away to gather dust and has not been used again. This was finally the SLR that I had really wanted from the beginning. I started adding more Canon lenses: 50/1.4, 200/2.8L, Sigma 28/2.0, 85/1.2L. I found FM forums, sticking to the Canon forum.

Found a Super-Takumar at a yard sale, and wondered if the screw threads would fit in the adapter on my Peleng 8mm. They did. I discovered that there was a whole world of alt lenses beyond the Canon offerings. Started opportunistically buying alt lenses when they appeared cheap on the FM Buy & Sell board --- Contax 28/2.8, 50/1.7, 50/1.4; Leitz Canada 50/2, 90/2; Oly 28/3.5, 24/2.8, 21/3.5; more and more...

Started to sell off the Canon lenses; goodbye 50/1.4. Got Oly wides; goodby 17-40L. Got a Leica 100/2.8 APO Macro; goodbye Canon 100/2.8. Got a Samyang 85/1.4; goodbye 85/1.2L. Eventually, all my autofocus lenses were gone.

Kept acquiring lots more alt lenses. Discovered the joys of Apo glass (Leica, Mamiya, Voigtlander). I now know I have all the glass I need; there's still a bit more I want, but I'll have to slow down on acquisition because the items I don't have would burn through a 6 month to couple year budget in one blow.

Here's my bit:

2006: Canon S2 IS
2007: Nikon D80 + 18-70mm lens kit, after playing with a friend's Canon 350D
Added 80-200mm AF-D, 50mm 1.8, 60mm Micro AF-D
2009: bought 24-70mm from a shop in Melbourne - I was totally ripped-off for this impulsive purchase
2010: sold D80 and 18-70, then picked up D2Xs a few months later, after seeing some great pics here. Sold 50mm and 80-200mm. Picked up the Zeiss bug here: 100 MP, 50 P and 21 D followed

2011: got 35 1.4 Distagon the first month it was released. Sold D2Xs, bought 2 used D700s from FM fellows when I traveled to the US. Bought 35mm 1.4 C/Y, haven't really used it.
Traded D700 + 24-70mm lens for Contax 645, 35mm, 80mm and 140mm later that year. Bought 120 f/4 Makro. This was just a few months after I constantly told my friend film was obsolete

2012: bought Contax G2, 21mm, 28mm, 45mm, 90mm package. Also bought 2nd Contax 645 body.

I'm thinking of switching to Canon to use the Contax lenses via NAM-1, and add Hasselblad FE 50mm 2.8, 110mm f/2 + tilt-shift adaptor. But I'd better stop the GAS from coming

That's a long and twisted tale, so I'll just summarize it with when I was young and broke I had one camera, two primes (35/2.8, 135/3.5), and loads of free time to shoot. Now that I'm older and more financially secure, I have four cameras, a lot more lenses (still mostly primes), and a fraction of the free time to dedicate to using them.
