I was testing through my lenses and I found that when I mount the 200mm onto the 5D3, the IS makes a weird clinking sound when
1. I let go of the shutter button
2. AI Servo
This does not happen on my 5D Mark 2. Has anybody else experienced this? What is confusing to me is that it only happens with the IS- which shouldn't be different among bodies.
EVERYBODY WITH THIS COMBO- please post on this thread if you DO hear the noise or DO NOT hear the noise. This will help with a firmware update or so to fix this problem!!!
*************************** FAQ
What does it sound like?
More like loud clicks. Buzzing or swirling is the gyroscope (that is normal). But this more like a hard click click click sound.
The strange noise that IS makes on 5DMkIII, is it only on startup/shutdown, in operation or can it be related to IS element parking brake application ?
I think this is only on startup/shutdown of the IS. With AI Servo- the startup/shutdown seems continuous therefore making the noise always there.
Is the sound qualitatively different, or just the volume of it is higher ?
It is different- it is like a CLICK CLICK sound not just the gyroscope spinning.
Does the IS stabilize the image OK ?
Yes- IS stabilize OK. No problems with it. Just the CLICKing worries be- because it doesn't sound too friendly with the noise.
YES!!!! I noticed the exact same thing yesterday and almost freaked out. Was about to send in my 200/2 for repairs. Seeing your post prompted me to attach the lens to my 5D2 and it's quieter there. Too bad I don't have my 1Ds3 anymore.
However, my 200/2 makes the loud noise with the 5D3 in servo or 1-shot mode.
Yesterday when I got home I tried all my other IS lenses on the 5D3 (28-300, 70-200, 24-105, 100, 400DO) and none made the noise. Somehow it didn't occur to me to try with my other camera...

Oh and I haven't noticed anything strange with the 70-200 or the 400 II either. Would be very strange if it was isolated to the 200 f/2.
... yet stranger things happened. I fuzzily remember there being a firmware upgrade to one camera in the recent few years to rectify a strange IS noise. Forgot what camera that was, though.
BTW, sorry to hear about your 200/2 loss. My wife has been very understanding so far - then again I don't have a 400/2.8 II
I'm not that heartbroken over it. It sat in my safe for the last couple of years and had only been used once in the last 2 years.
My wife always rolled her eyes when new gear shows up. She's been surprisingly understanding with all the Leica lenses once I told her it meant I would be bringing a much smaller bag with us on our trip
I too have this awfully strange IS noise on my 5D3 with the 200. Me and my friend were wondering what the noises were when we took the combo out this afternoon. Must be a firmware bug and I hope Canon fixes this pronto! Glad I'm not the only one with this problem

Does it perhaps sound as if the camera is causing IS to chatter on-off when it should be normally running ?
Is the sound qualitatively different, or just the volume of it is higher ?
I tried out this len/body combo for a few minutes at the LensProToGo booth last weekend at Photoshop World. FWIW, I did not notice any abnormal sounds or behavior.
I hear the same, that the 5D3 and 200/2 makes a LOT more noise from the IS vs. same lens on 5D2. Especially noticable when in AI Servo!. Doubble check with 1D2... same as the 5D2
Hi, not related, but related to the AF. I'm noticing on old lenses that the AF is sporadic, inconsistent, in short really bad. Mainly on my modified Contax lenses. I would think it's the lenses, but they are spot-on with my Mark ii. The other lenses I've tried are fine.
So there must be something with the new AF that needs to be adjusted...
