So with the news of the Canon 1DX being the "professional" model, I've been looking at the Nikon D800 rumors with intense interest.

At this point the 14-24G, 24G, 200G look like no brainers. I'm less impressed with what I've read on the 50mm's

I currently shoot with the 1DS3 and 50L f1.0 and the 50mm focal length is my bread and butter. I am hoping that friendly Nikonites can help give me some insight on the Nikon offerings.

I tried to do some research and am coming up with mixed reviews on the 50G vs. Sigma 50. I would consider the 50 1.8D as well if it's the best in bunch albeit slower. What say you? Especially interested in dual platform users or converts.

PS - need AF. No manual focus AIS/ZF

The Sigma 50 f/1.4 may beat the Nikon 50 f/1.4G in center sharpness and fast AF, but the Nikon version has the overall sharpness in center and border.

You should also take a look at the 50 f/1.8G. Not as fast as the 1.4G version, but does share a lot of similarities with it more than the Sigma.

I vote for the 50/1.8G. I have owned the 50/1.4G and Sigma 50/1.4 and it is the best of the bunch for the money and AF speed. The Sigma's AF is too erratic and the 50/1.4G is slow to focus and not very sharp wide open.

What's your time frame? The Sigma is the more interesting, albeit inconsistenly built option until the rumored 50/1.2G materializes, possible late this year.

I'd go for the Sigma 50mm f1.4, for performance.

Of all the Nikon 50mm AF offerings, I prefer the 1.8G if you can live with it being tack sharp wide open/great bokeh/brisk AF

+1, i've been searching for a good 50mm, and the 1.4 didn't seem as attractive as the 1.8 for some reason, both G of course. The sigma came to my attention because of its nice rendition of bokeh, but overall the 1.8 has pretty good bokeh for the price and is plenty sharp around the edges

I would skip the 50 all together and get the 35. Ifyou must have a 50 then the sigma or 50 f1.8g would be the ones I would choose from. The sigma is much faster focusing and better then the Nikon 1.4 g in the center at all of the low apertures. The f1.8 is about equal to the f1.4 but cost less and is a better bang for the buck. If you use to the 1.0 L sharpness then any of these choices will be sharper with the sigma having better bokeh.

I very much like the Nikkor 50mm F1.8G as well.....prefer it to the faster Nikkor and the Sigma.

Whatever happened to the 50mm F1.7 lens anyway? When I was a kid, my Dad's Pentax had a 50mm F1.7 as did the Konica I had for a while back in the late '70's (maybe early '80's).

There are consistent rumours of a 50 f/1.2G lens showing up at some point, so from that perspective, the 1.8G makes a lot of sense too. A fine lens, easy on the pocketbook, and easy to give up if/when a 1.2G lens arrives.

I'm still pondering the OP's question directed at "Nikonites." As much as I love my Nikon kit, I have no interest in joining a club with a name like that...

Consider that if you sell the 50 f/1.0 you could buy one of EVERY 50mm lens made for Nikon and make your own decision. Or you could sell it and buy the NOCT, 58 f/1.2 which narrows the angle of view by about five degrees. Or you could wait for the lens Philip suggests may be arriving in the near future, the 50 f/1.2G.

Sounds like the 50mm 1.8G is the way to go. For the 50mm, I'm not really budget conscious considering I use it for most of my work and every Nikon options is much less pricey than the Canon 50Ls.

As for the 50L 1.0, it's not a soft lens, it's no macro, but the copy I have is better than the 50L 1.2 I've owned. There were so few purchased and even fewer in circulation now that I don't feel it received a fair shake.

My time frame is after the d800 comes out so... hopefully they will release the Nikon 50mm 1.2G at the same time, that would probably be ideal. With today's technology, Nikon can probably knock this out of the ball park if they want to. The 200 f2G is spectacular, maybe they can take whatever special sauce they used on that lens and shrink it down to 50mm. Not super impressed with the 50 1.4G in the comparisons vs. Sigma but I have high hopes for a 50 1.2G. The 50 1.2AIS was a great lens and a good starting point for something awesome.
