Weather permitting, which is almost every day, I like to spend about an hour photographing birds that fly. I go after any birds that are available, which in winter is severely restricted, although mallards and pijuns can always be counted on. Summers are much better in species variety, not to mention the environment/background quality .
The best analogy would be to compare my BIF shooting to hunting.....except I hunt with my camera-lens, not with a weapon.
The reward of the sport is a successful capture. Also, always hoping to get a real nice "trophy" picture some day.
Given the time I have spent on this pursuit, I would have probably become good at it eventually, had it not been for changing lenses constantly, from wide angle to 800mm, which keeps pushing me back onto the learning curve time and time again.
Here's today's catch, such as it is.
Edit: This thread has been replaced with a fresh one on Jan.30,2012.
I agree with the hunting comparison, I now hunt with the camera, very nice duck shooting on the duck. I do miss having the dog to retrieve though. Bruce
You have been posting some eye-thrilling BIF's Peter. I really like #1 with sharpness and motion all expressed in one image
#2 What a great flare shot, sweet and lovely!

#3 seems a bit 'dull' to me??
Karl
Thank you, Karl.....you are so right, the No.3 is indeed dull, however, it's the best drake I got today.
I guess a few things were missing on him, one of them was some good sunlight to ignite the plumage colours.
BTW....the white in the background of #2 is patches of snow..
1 is a super shot Peter, the motion blur of the wing with the trailing drops of water accentuate the sharp body of the body of the bird
2 I really like the wing position, the detail in the feathers and the feeling of motion I get from the shot. I'm not real keen on snow in bg but as you said, winter isn't the best times for backgrounds
Nice set Peter,#1 being my fave...I echo what Tim Kuhn wrote.
