Just picked up a brand new copy of this lens.
Initial results, not great. So I Microfocus adjusted the lens (have not had to do that for my new lenses). it was back focusing, put in -6.
Is there a focus shift at f2.8 with this lens?
does any one have issues with focus consistency, esp with far objects (20 feet away)?
Center sharpness if very good in focus. corner sharpness is good, but even at f 5.6, does not have perfect corners (my tse 24 is sharper at f 3.5 than the 24 1.4 is at f 5.6) is this expected?
thanks for your thoughts.
Edit. I am putting these examples as to focus inconsistency.
I shot these at the acquarium today, 6 shots in a row, f 2, 1/25 sec, iso 800. set to center focus point, AI focus, 4 fps. point of focus is the polar bear.
here is the sequence of the middle 4

frames 1, 2, 3, and 6, are in very good focus. frames 4 and 5 are both back focused. here are crops of frame 3 and 4 4 is obviously back focused with the pinguin in the background in focus. 5 looks the same.

That sounds about right. But a couple of things. Have you tried your shot locked down on a tripod, and compared the AF to a manually focused Live View focus? That will tell you for sure. Corner sharpness will never match the TS-E II, but it does get better at f/8 and f/11.

Mine copy on the 5DII is excellent, I am never afraid to shoot even wide open, my corners are excellent by F2-2.8 and I have never had a issue with far away items, either. You DOF at 1.4-2 is pretty darn narrow, so if you shoot near wide open, the area in focus is not that large. But if its a landscape and all far away, then there should be no issues. It is pretty much the lens that keeps me from selling my 5D and going with a smaller and simpler NEX system. Love mine.

No complaints here. If you compare most lenses to the 24TSE @ f/3.5, you'll be sorely disappointed. That's why I own both.

I am having problems with the 24mm 1.4II on my 7D. On live view it is focusing perfectly every time, near and far. Focusing normally at infinity at larger apertures, say f2.8, the focus is well off. Dialing in a Microfocus adj of +20 and its bang on (just squeezing in the 7D's scale). Without the Microfocus adj, even tapping the focus, the infinity mark doesn't get anywhere near. Near focus is ok of course! Tried my 135mm f2 today and at infinity it was bang on, perfect sharpness. Others have reported problems with the 24mm 1.4II per their reviews. Whether this is inherent to the lens or poor QC I don't know. Mine is a May 2010 date.

I need to do a little more testing before I take it in. I can't return it unfortunately. But I am disappointed after spending so much

Bought a 24 II / L with back focusing issues that weren't repairable with MF adjust. Did an exchange with no questions asked by B&H. Second copy was perfect AF wise. Holy moly on the vignetting, but that's part of the style of the lens (lovely moody bokeh rich photos).

I guess -6 is not too bad, just a little disappointed, as all of my other new lenses are not visibly oof without adjustment.
I have to shoot more with it. My initial impressions are that it may have some inconsistent focusing. I am certainly aware of the shallow DOF at 24. However, having owned and shot extensively with 35 1.4, and 85 1.2 on the 5dII, I think I have a reasonable understanding and expectation of focus accuracy and consistency. as for the corners, I think its acceptable. sharpness is good over all I think, as long as the focus is accurate.
I bought mine from adorama. not sure if they have a 7 day or 30 day return policy. gotta test it thoroughly to see if i want to return it for an exchange.

I have had focus issues with the 24 on multiple T2i bodies but works great on 40D. There is some incompatiblity in the T2i/24 body/lens combo.

The TS-E lenses have a physical advantage in the corners. They are designed to produce an oversize image circle to enable shifting. So when you use them unshifted, your image corners fall well inside the image circle. Not so with standard lenses. Even the older-design f/2.8 90 TS-E is razor sharp in the extreme corners by f/5.6. Outperforms the 85 f/1.2 II in that respect.

When I had a t2i the 24L II was great on it. It is amazing on full frame! If you have issues with the lens, send the body lens combo to canon and they will adjust.

I had to send my 24/1.4 II in for calibration twice before they finally got it right. It wouldn't focus on infinity with AF. Now it's good.

I tried 3 copies of this lens on my 7D and almost gave up on it because of erratic front and back focusing. Found out it was my 7D.

I did a "hard reset" of my 7D and now it works great. I took the regular and clock battery out of the 7D and left it in the on position all night. Next morning it was like a new lens. Glad I found that, cause the 24L II is one nice lens.

Alright, after further testing, I settled on -2 for mfa. will test it on my 7D also.
it does tend to be a little less consistent than my 35 1.4. it tends to adjust itself from shot to shot on the same subject same distance. sharpness is without a doubt very good when in focus. will play with it some more and post some images. in the meantime, the obligatory cat shots, at 1.4

I haven't really noticed any issues with mine. Corners are generally nice at f/5.6, extreme edges utterly crisp, and even at f/3.5 the corners are not bad (edges very sharp), maybe if you look at the extreme outer edge of the worst corner or two it gets a little soft but that is like 0.5% of the entire image.

I suppose some might depend upon how the field curvature happens to match the typical ways and whats you shoot.

It blows away the two 24-105L I tried and blows away my 24 2.8 (from what I recall for that one).

Thanks Skibum. Sharpness is not so much of an issue. It seems to be focus inconsistency more than anything else.

I am having to do a +7 MF adjustment on my copy but I have not tested it out in actual shooting. My 5D II's outer AF points are practically useless so I would always only shoot with the center AF point ... but I am perfectly happy with that because the lens is very sharp in the center and I prefer to recompose and crop in post ... and there is more than enough megapixels in the 5D II for me to do that.

thanks for your input Bobby. heading out to Acquarium of Pacific. will take the lens with 5dII and stick to center focus, and see how the consistency is. Trying it on my 7D, I am still unfortunately having issues with what I consider unacceptably high number of OOF shots.

I would think the 85L, 100L or 70-200L would be a better lens for aquarium fish ... but if you get a cool shot and manage to get a fish in the center of the 24L frame, post it here!
