i don't think the new camera announcement will have much of an impact on a $2000 d700..the new one, even if it only has a manageable amount of mp, will be a $3k camera which would only be 10% higher than the msrp for the d700 at the moment. the $2k price point for the d700 seems about right to me if the new one is going to be another $1k and the d3 is still between $2500 and $3000 for a mint used one. there will likely be more on the market so prices might soften a touch, but i wouldn't expect a big drop for quite some time. quite frankly, if used d700's are really selling from 2400-2600 you are much better off buying a used d3 imo.

if the D800 comes out at $4k as indicated, there will be a tremendous price gap below it. I do not see the D800 as a D700 replacement and think that the D700 will be in the line-up for another year - perhaps at a slightly lower price unless Nikon is smart enough to put the D3s sensor in it. The used price damage will be to the D3x not the D700. There will not be any discounting of the D800 for several months as demand is met - only when they start sitting on the shelves will the price go lower than list. The D4 - well, unless you are a shooter with Olympics accreditation, ...

It doesn't matter what the D800 is priced at. Some nonzero number of D700 owners will be upgrading (adding supply) and some who might be interested in the D700 will step up to the D800 instead (reducing demand). This will make D700 prices drop. It's as certain as death and taxes.

I think you're oversimplifying it a bit, but I do think there will be at least a temporary drop on used D700's while folks upgrading are selling their old ones, just like prices went up when new ones were hard to get due to the disaster in Japan.

Or maybe you're just reading more into it than I wrote. I think a price drop is certain. Based on the usefulness of the camera I'd predict it's small, but experience tells me it's always more than this. I've owned so many cameras in the past that lost almost half their resale value when the next model came out - the Canon 1D, 1Ds, 1D2, 1Ds2, Leica DMR, Leica M8, Mamiya ZD - that I know from experience that used sale values drop more than rational analysis would predict. It's simply a matter of life. Buy a DSLR and it'll lose half its value by the time the next model ships. I've made too many predictions against it, and been wrong each time, that I've learned this lesson the hard way.

D700's will maintain a good chunk of their value. why?? simply put, FX appeal. FX market is so much smaller than the DX market, so smaller supply will simply lead to higher resale values. especially if the d800 is aimed at a different market niche. i mean look at the canon 5d classic. its still fetching around 900-1100, and its a 6 year old camera. SIX YEARS. thats an eternity for electronics, but its still a decently sought after camera. shallow DOF, clean high ISO's, focal lengths as they were intended to be... there's a price to pay for these qualities...

Its a digital camera, it will come down eventually whether owners want it or not.

My wish is that Nikon would produce the D700 forever. It has the exact features and performance that I want. Its a shooters camera.

According to ebay...

So at $2050 you'd be getting a good deal, at $2200 you'd be overpaying.

I'd expect a drop of maybe $250 when the D800 is announced, and an additional drop when they start shipping.

Cool graph. However, none of you seem to have taken into account the very basic fact that supply of D700 has been artificially constrained for most of this year due to Sendai disaster. Thus, your analysis is really meaningless since there hasn't been a true supply/demand market. Canon seemed to be less affected. Note used 5D-II are selling for ~$1,700 now, and there's been a recent deal on new ones that netted them down to $1,800. Used 5D are now selling for ~$700. Once D800 is out in numbers, I look for D700 to be selling below $1,400 a year from now. Bottom line is it's just a 10 mp camera.

No no no. Small market = small demand, lower price. If FX is perceived to be for a premium market, why would anyone choose a 10mp product? Look at the price of used Canon 5D for an indication.

Why do you keep insisting on 10mp, Kent? The D700 uses a 12.1mp sensor.

Its 12 MP, Kent, not 10. If you had tried one (D700) and could see what its does with its 12 MP you would be amazed. You have to understand that not all MPs are created equal, the pixels actually come in different sizes. Its not more is better. You could have a 12 MP P&S but it wouldn't give you the same performance as a 12 MP DX or a 12 MP FX. I have both the 12 MP D300 and the 12 MP D700. Most would think the D300 would out perform due to the "higher resolution", but the D700 wins everytime. There's more to I.Q. than megapixels.

well its looking like the D800 isn't a replacement for the D700 as all the specs flying around make it more like a D3x killer.

My thoughts exactly. 100% viewfinder, likely no built-in flash. High MP count. Ethernet? Seems more like a studio/landscape camera to me, which the D700 was not (IMHO) geared toward, though that's what I use it for.

Can't wait to see the truth not long from now according to rumors.

Personally, I'd love to see an 18MP D700s or something like that. Little more resolution, little weaker AA filter and some body upgrades (video is inevitable) and I'm good for the near future.

This really makes me wonder if we might not see a D700s after all.

I'm guessing the D700 in its current form will remain in the line-up throughout 2012 as the affordable FX body.

actually right now the D800's supposed specs, via the rumor mills, are starting to look like its been designed by Homer Simpson

i guess if you throw enough possible tech junk/specs out on paper (or screen) you're bound to be right on a minimal level.
