p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Used D700 prices after D800 is out?

I'm toying with the idea of buying a D700, but since we're only weeks away from a possible D800/D4/D400 or whatever it is they're planning to announce at PMA, I'm inclined to wait for D700 prices to come down.

- Any guesstimates on how low prices might go, for a used D700 in good condition?
- Anybody else waiting to get a D700 after used prices go lower?

Thanks.

If the D800 rumors prove to be true (36mp, etc.), the D800 will probably sell for something between $3k and $4k. I'm betting that prices for used D700s aren't going to change as much as people are hoping and will likely stay in the $1800-$2000 range.

I'm not a fan of megapixels race... but D800 is highly expected by a large number of people that will buy it as soon as it will be available, no matter of the increase cost involved. Because of this I really believe that a large number of D700 will instantly hit the used market... and IMHO the average price will not be higher than $1500. Anyhow take with a bit of salt my guestimation

I'd buy one if it fell below $1700

Another exercise in mental masturbation. The new cameras aren't out yet, you don't really know if they'll be announced at PMA (remember the August announcement?). I think the D700 (the ones in good condition) will hold their value very well. I'm not going to sell mine. Its to good of a camera to get rid of. Why buy used anyway? You don't really save much and you can get someoneelses problems.

I sold my D700 (super mint) in the summer for $1800 and it had about 20,000 clicks, expecting the new D800 to be out early in fall 2011. Since I have been shooting mostly with a D3s, the D700 was a "back-up" body. I have seen some bodies for less than $1800 that but with higher number of clicks.

The price for used D700s would depend of how prices move (up or down) for the remaining D700s and the price of the D800. My impression is that prices for new Nikon cameras will go up. For instance, prices for refurbished models have increased in the last month or so.

I could see that happening. D700 owners may not like it, but anytime there's a newer model, the older models take a hit. After all, look at D3 prices.

Maybe, maybe not. But, with the news about Nikon having resumed DSLR production after all the natural disasters that wrecked havoc in Asia, there's a higher chance of the new cameras being announced at PMA than not, IMHO. We'll see if you'll sell it or not after a few months of drooling over the D800. Except for 1 new Canon 7D (when it came out) and a new D7000, ALL my DSLR purchases were used - starting from an old Canon D60 (not 60D), and I've never ever had trouble with any of those bodies, except the brand new 7D which I had to send to Canon for re-calibration, etc.

Yeah, $1800 seems to be a good price for the buyer at this time, and $2000 seems to be a good price for the seller.

Exactly.

I would think now is the time to buy on craigslist and get a lower price because of the holidays and people needing money. That being said I bought both of my d700 on there for 1700 and 1800 about a year ago. One with 800 clicks and the other one with 3k clicks.

I think that D700 owners wont let their camera go, unless they are in landscape and similar stuff. Cant imagine how 36 mpix sensor could have same SNR as 12 mpix in D700, which in this aspect is pretty amazing. So most likely no low-light from D800 (or as much as from A77 .. means not much).

Not sure if this movement wont cause some shifting of photographers from Nikon to Canon (or even Sony..).

But new 5DMK3 is rumored to have some outlandish mpix number too, so.. not much help there.

Im pretty sure we wont be winners in mpix wars..

Where do you guys find such great deals That too 1 year back? Even now, the asking prices for D700s are high. I guess I am not good at bargaining.

We'll see.

Hope it's not 36MP but 18 or 21.

Ebay and several other sites I just checked and D700 is going for $2400-$2600 used. Expecting something close to $800 drop in used prices quickly is expecting a lot.

Check FM Buy and Sell - recent listings spanned the range of asking prices from $1850 to $2200. Some sellers are living in a dream and asking for $2400 to $2600 and so on on eBay or else those items are not really selling, or else there are idiots on ebay who don't keep track of current used prices.

This is something I am watching as well. There is one on my local craigslist for $1,800 right now. Seems to be about the price.

I find that there is generally a initial dip and prices stabilize then start to go down in a linear fashion. I am amazed on how cheaply you can pick up a D200, D80, or D90 these days, but it's taken a long time for the prices to flatten.

My plan is to buy when that initial dip happens and the market's flooded with D700s. Right now, you can find two or three D700s on FM Buy and Sell at any point of time. Imagine when new model gets out.

When the 5D2 came out I got around $1250 each for my two 5D's used in 8+ /9 cond. (with 30K clicks). The B/S was flooded with them, but within 4-5 months they were fetching $1500 as the supply was outstripped by the demand. So if you can wait.....

i expect the D800 to be in short supply for more than just several months. i don't think D700 prices will move much for a long time after the D800 ships.

I think it will drop the D3x price more than the 700.
